Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative with rear hook spring attachment. Missing spring, pin, and damaged catchplate; mostly in very good condition. Corroded patches at the back of the wings at both ends are probably evidence of solder to hold the spring. The wings have moulded terminals - a flute and a worn hatched bead, separated by narrow grooves. The bow is a reverse D-section type, ie it has a slightly convex decorated front and is deeply rounded behind this. The decoration consists of longitudinal narrow ribs and grooves, the two centre ribs having angled lightly incised hatc…

Copper alloy brooch fragment, Colchester derivative hinged type. Upper half only, missing most of one wing and pin. Iron hinge bar. Mid wing there is a convex moulding with horizontal line hatching and flanked by single grooves; any further decoration towards the wing terminal has been destroyed by corrosion. At the junction of the wings and the bow there is a raised area (1mm high) on each side of the bow with a curved edge echoing the line of the wing edge. The bow has a slightly convex back and a rounded front with a narrow centre rib. There are traces of an angled groove on each si…

Copper alloy brooch, Hattatt's "reversed fantail" type. Missing spring, pin and damage to the catchplate but otherwise in good condition. Corrosion in the right hand side of the back of the wings is probably from solder to hold the spring, the chord of which was held by a rear hook. The wings have single terminal and diagonal grooves. The flat-backed bow can be divided into three areas: the upper part has a forward bulge and a pair of incised lines which originate at the centre below the rear hook and diverge around the bulge, ending at the bottom on each side. At the centre of the bow…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of an unusual type, probably a Hod Hill variant of 1st or 2nd century AD date. The brooch is comparatively small and is now in two pieces. The brooch employed a twin lug hinge mechanism. The front of the upper bow is plain except for a horizontal moulding above and beneath the position of the hinge. The bow opens out to a rectangular panel, decorated with a beaded border containing two linear vertical beaded lines, either side of a decorative panel containing irregular-shaped cells, possibly intended for enamel. Beneath the panel the lower bow has broken, …

Copper alloy brooch, Nauheim or Drahtfibel related type. Missing foot and most of catchplate; bow and pin bent. The pin and spring are a rod of circular section, 1.5mm in diameter, with an external chord. At the bow the rod becomes triangular in section, remaining narrow (2.2mm wide) and tapering to a point. There is a single groove along each side of the bow. The stub of the catchplate has an internal v-shaped nick which may suggest that it was open. Surviving length 36mm. The external chord and possibly open catchplate suggest a date earlier than the common post-Conquest Nauheim deri…

Copper alloy brooch, Colchester type. Missing part of the catchplate; lower part of the pin detached; catchplate bent and bow very bent recently judging by metal condition. The spring and pin appear to be a replacement; the original spring wire is 2mm in diameter and joined to the centre base of the wings as normal, but only one loop survives, with the end tucked under the the forward hook. The replacement spring and pin are made of 1.5mm diameter wire with a separate axis bar. The spring has 7 turns and the chord is held by the forward hook, with the axis bar through the loop of the o…

Incomplete Roman T-shape bow brooch of 1st - 2nd century AD date. The brooch is represented by the upper bow and one of the wings only, and employed a hinge mechanism with tubular wings. The head is decorated with a raised chevron moulding around the hinge. The bow is flat with tapering sides. The upper bow is decorated with two opposing triangular cells set within a raised rectangular panel. The cells would have contained enamel. Small amounts of iron corrosion staining around the hinge may suggest an iron pin or axis bar.
