Record ID: SUSS-6F2A65
Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
A gold ring of uncertain date. The ring has been badly damaged by the plough and as a result has been pulled out of shape. The ring is complete and still roughly circular (maximum diameter 23.09mm) and the gold is very thin (only 1.03mm thick). The maximum width of the hoop is about 4.7mm. There is no decoration on the ring, and it does not look worn; it may have been a decorative binding ring, for example from a walking stick, instead of a finger-ring.

This coin is probably a gold quarter stater of Cunobelin. it is just possible to see a horse facing right, with a branch above on one side, and perhaps an ear of corn on the other. It weighs 1.29g and has a diamter of 11.9mm and is 2.14mm thick.
The coin is in very poor condition, and it is suggested by Philip de Jersey that it has been made with very debased gold or may even be a contemporary Iron Age forgery. It is impossible to give an exact type.

Gold Gallo Belgic A quarter stater,Scheers series 8 class IV.
Philip de Jersey comments:a coin from the same dies is illustrated in John Sills's new work on 'Gaulish and early British gold coinage' (2003) as pl. 9.282, and also on Fig. 28l (p. 129). We have records of about half a dozen coins from the same pair of dies, including one from Selsey and another from Great Leighs, Essex. The obverse is readily identifiable by the two large 'wedge' shapes behind the ear.
