A short length of gold strip from an unidentified object of uncertain date. The strip is rectangular in section and has rounded ends. It is bent double and has some damage at the bend. The strip is undecorated. Due to a lack of archaeological context and diagnostic features it is not possible to assign this to any particular date or culture and is best regarded as an undiagnostic fragment. The strip can be compared to YORYM-90AE41 (2011 T743) and BUC-CC8463 (2010T510). Discussion: Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, and despite it containing a minimum of 10% precious…

gold object. The object is of hollow conical form with a flat base. Around the base is a border of beading, now quite worn. On the bottom is the remainder of solder which may indicate that this item was attached/ or part of a larger object. The top of the object has been dented as have other parts of the object.

A folded gold strip comprising eleven gold wires joined side by side by soldering. Max. length 15.93mm; max. width 8.14mm; max. thickness 4.4mm; thickness of wire approx.. 0.62mm; weight 2.26 grams. Both manufacturing technique and composition are consistent with a Bronze Age date, although precise analogues for the type are presently lacking. Gold ribbon ornaments are known from the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1300-1100 BC, but the ribbed effect is achieved here by grooving (cf the piece from Ilam, Staffs. (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 20, no.14). Solder is used at this date in the…

TREASURE ITEM 2012 T628: Fragment of a gold strip with the longest edge deliberately and neatly folded. The other edges are damaged and are most likely not deliberate. 8mm up from the longest edge is a line of small punched dots such that the folded edge appears on the same side from which the punching has been carried out. There is a small hole in the top right of the piece that is probably not deliberate. A similar gold strip was found in East Lindsey, Lincolnshire PAS ID YORYM-AECC98. Date: In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to ass…

A gold decorative fragment. This fragment seems to probably be complete but it is uncertain what artefact type it would have originally have been attached to. This decorative fragment is of a slightly scrolled foliate design. The symmetrical item has a raised central rib that terminates in a spherical knop. To either side of this rib are two tear-drop shaped lobed fields demarcated by a raised border. Another raised line lays parallel to the upper borders of the top lobes, curving in towards the upper half of the central rib before scrolling outward and expanding to form a single sphe…

Late Saxon/Early medieval gold thread found during an archaeological excavation by AC Archaeology in 2009. A single tiny fragment of gold thread was recovered during the process of soil sampling of the fill of a small pit or post hole F328, which also contained a small quantity (12 sherds) of late Saxon/early Medieval pottery and two iron nails. The thread measures 3.5mm in length and less than 1mm in thickness. The fragment of gold thread from Barton Hill would therefore qualify as Treasure under two of the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act: it is more than 300 years old and…

One end of a gold strip broken into two pieces of unknown date. The complete end is squared off with slightly rounded corners. The strip widens gradually and consistantly from 6.0mm at the complete end to 12.9mm at the break. The centre is slightly recessed for some of the strip leaving raised edges but it is otherside undecorated. The strip was apparently rolled up when found but was straighened by the finder. it is now 24.3mm long and 0.3mm thick at the thinnest point (in the centre of the broken edge), 0.9mm thick at the thickest point on the edges. It weighs 1.30 grams in total. …

TREASURE CASE : 2012 T431 A small lump of gold of uncertain date. The object is sub-circular in plan with a D-shaped section and smooth rounded edges. It is likely to be casting waste. Date: Unknown Dimensions: Diameter: 14.4mm; Thickness: 4.4mm; Weight 5.3g. Discussion: Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, and despite it containing a minimum of 10% precious metal, it cannot be securely dated to pre-1712 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Dimensions: The fragment weighs 3.93g, has a length of 13.03mm, width of 11.50mm and is 2.68mm thick. The fragment has a rectangular cross-section and possible evidence of having been hammered. It is the curatorial opinion that this gold fragment is undiagnostic, and cannot be attributed to a specific period. Due to the…
