Gold coin. Solidus of Valentinian I (364-375), mint of Arles, issue of 364-367, Reece period 19, RIC volume 9 no. 1(b). This coin is in excellent condition, the only flaw being where the edge has been tweaked at 7 O'clock (obverse), probably to assay the material in antiquity. Obverse description: Bust rosette diademed draped and cuirassed right. Obverse inscription: DN VALENTINI ANVS PF AVG Reverse description: Emperor standingright holding labarum with palm frond on its shaft and Victory on globe. Reverse inscription: RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE In exergue: KONST…

A single Roman gold coin, a solidus of Arcadius, found in exactly the same area as a hoard of 26 late Roman gold solidi and 4 silver siliquae discovered in 1993. Arcadius, solidus, mint of Milan, Roman Imperial Coinage volume IX, 35b (September 6, 394 t…

A gold Roman solidus of Constantius II, c.350-355 AD. Reverse: GLORIA-REI-PVBLICA, Roma and Constantinopolis enthroned. Roma facing holding spear in left hand, Constantinopolis left with sceptre in left hand and right foot resting on prow. Between them a wreath inscribed VOT/XXX/MVLT/XXXX. As RIC 8 no. 147, however the reverse type and particularly the lettering of the legend, which should read GLORIA REI PVBLICAE, suggest that this is an ancient copy rather than an official issue (R. Bland & P. Walton pers. comm.). At the start of the reign of Valentinian I (AD 364-75), the gold co…
