An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. The reverse of the head is flat to accommodate the spring mechanism which is comprised of two wide lugs with a central axis bar and pin loop. The pin no longer remains. The head itself is trumpet shaped and tapers to form the upper bow which extends to a worn collar. Below the collar is a crude acanthus decoration which terminates in a worn break. TREASURE CASE: 2012 T356 A medieval brooch with a circular frame and a recess to accommodate a pin. The pin has a grooved collar and is bent out of shape at about a 90 degree angle. The brooch is silver and dates from the thirteenth century. Dimensions: diameter 15 mm. J P Robinson Curator of Medieval Collections 9th August 2012 Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A third knop at the top of the curved edge marks the remains of the attachment loop which no longer survives. A Roman period copper alloy probably of a Hippocampus facing right; 20.61mm long, 13.70mm wide, and 4.12mm thick. The brooch weighs 1.21g and is similar to that of no.1417 in Hattatt's Visual Catalogue figure 222. The brooch is sub rectangular in form and rectangular in section. The overall shape is a curved tapering plate, resembling the letter J with a small rectangular protrusion on the outer side of the curve which represents the start of a limb. Part of a medieval copper alloy annular plate brooch frame with an inscription on one side reading +IhESVS and on the other AGRACIA (the complete inscriptions would be + IhESVS NAZARENVS and AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA or similar). An incomplete copper-alloy Roman brooch. The head and upper part of the bow are missing, having been lost in antiquity. The remaining part of the bow consists of a short, parallel-sided curve. A cast copper-alloy Middle Saxon ansate brooch. It is incomplete with one terminal and the bow, the rest missing due to old breaks. The terminal is leaf-shaped and flat with three pellet in circles on each edge. The bow is rectangular and is decorated with four longitudinal ribs. Part of the catchplate survives on the rear of the terminal. This is sub-triangular in shape and flat in section and begins to curve over at the top. It measures 33.00mm in length, 7.89mm in width across the bow, 17.01mm in width across the terminal, 3.02mm in thickness and weighs 4.60g. Compare FAKL-1A4246.

It is of circular section, gradually widening at the two opposing terminals, each of which is deeply grooved, creating three joined discs, the inner two of which have toothed edges. The rim around the central oval is decorated with a series of sinuate line and gilding. A fragment from a cast gilded copper-alloy cast saucer brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, dating from circa AD 450 to 550. The remains of the brooch show that the front surface was decorated with a moulded 'running spirals' design. Some of the gilding has abraded away, exposing a black surface. Elsewhere patches of green copper corrosion are visible. On the reverse the remains of the broken hinge for the pin, or possibly the catchplate, are visible. The brooch fragment measures 23.64 mm long, 17.07 mm wide, 1.89 mm thick and weighs 2.2 grams.

Cast copper-alloy trumpet brooch dating from the early Roman period, that is c. AD75-175. The brooch is incomplete and very worn with pin, pin rest and spring missing. A fragment of a Hod Hill type of Roman copper alloy bow brooch; measuring 20.22mm in length, 9.39mm in width, 2.69mm in depth, and weighing 1.19g. All that remains of this brooch is the uppermost, right-hand part. This consists of a sub-rectangular extension angled out to the right, atop a curved length of the upper plate of the brooch. The reverse of this fragment bears a few incised lines but no obvious evidence of the pinning mechanism itself.
