A fragment from a cast lead alloy seal matrix of late medieval date (1200-1400). The fragment is irregular in plan - originally being a pointed oval / vesica-shape. The broken edges are all old and abraded and a light grey coloured corrosion product is present. The design on the front face is lost - the central element comprised a vertical hollow sided shape - possibly a vertical cross which is enclosed by a slight incised border which echos the shape of the seal. The inscription is similarly lost - from what survives the following letters can be seen: [...]RD [...] ENO [...]. In the …

It has an off centre circular perforation, recessed on one side. The circular die features two heads facing each other within a pelleted border. The people have well defined hair and facial features. A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date, probably dating to the 14th century. The seal matrix is incomplete, missing the top of the handle which would have probably had a suspension loop at the top. The base of the seal matrix is slightly hexagonally faceted, with the facets rising up to a collar on the handle, above which is the break.
The base of the seal matrix has an incised central design set within a circular border. The design features a lozenge shaped shield with a creature in the centre, almost certainly a lion rampant. Around the central design there is an insc…

Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast vesica or elongated oval shaped matrix with incised central motif and legend around the edge. The central motif appears to be a stylised fleur de lis, a symbol with strong Marian and Trinitarian associations. The legend, which is clearer on one side than on the other, appears to read: + ?S?I :?E - - C / . HEVE+?VINT. The back of the matrix bears the stub of a lug at the base of a relief fleur de lis; a motif whose three petals rise from a straight horizontal bar, a similar convention to that appearing on the matrix itself. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-…
