Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of very hard fine grained stone which seems to have been used as kiln furniture, or been in a pottery kiln for another reason, because it has glaze covering one end, which probably ran off the vessels in the kiln during firing. The glaze is clear with patches of rich olive green (iron based?) and on one face is very thick and bubbly, and discoloured to a purple brown. The stone is pink on the outer face where not glazed, and grey inside. The stone has fractured, perhaps due to heat. The stone looks to have been roughly rectangular before it broke. It may have been used as a sp…

A cast copper-alloy harness pendant of Medieval date, probably c. 1200-1300. The pendant is largely complete, missing a portion of the very worn suspension loop. The pendant is sub-square in plan with a thick outer edge with moulded notches, creating a wavy, beaded effect. The field is sunken, of 3-4mm depth, with a central, domed square boss. Description: A silver open-frame brooch, made by bending a circular-sectioned wire to form the now-distorted ring. The pin is of circular section, tapers to a point and is slightly bent. Adjacent to the pin loop there is a moulded collar decorated with punched circles. Discussion: A parallel for this brooch is Treasure find 2006 T161 from Wiltshire (TAR 2005/6: 104, no. 316). In terms of age, and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy double loop buckle, dating from the Medieval period. The buckle is a small example, and retains not only the copper pin but also a small strap plate affixed to the pin bar; this small folded sheet of copper alloy is looped over the pin bar and would have been secured to a strap with a rivet, which survives intact. It is not common to find such a buckle with the strap plate intact in this way. This type of buckle dates from c. AD 1250-1400.
