Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two small pellets of metal of unknown date, probably lead alloy, which are probably the result of metal working in the area. One is a white patinated sub-spherical pellet which is about 4.8mm in diameter and weighs 0.49g. The other is a solid hemisphere of dark grey metal (perhaps unpatinated lead alloy). The flat face is rough and pitted, and the convex face is smooth with pimples at the apex. It is 6.04mm in diameter, 3.9mm tall and weighs 0.48g. Though superficially similar to the many lead alloy weights recovered from this site, these droplets do not have the characteristic depres…

The foot is hollow on the base. The main body is circular at the base widening front and back to an oval shape at the broken top. The upper rim and most of the upper part is missing to corroded breaks. At the back it widens out only slightly and there are stubs of the handle on the casting seam do…

Medieval or Post Medieval cast lead alloy circular double sided token of Powell type 1. The token has a raised design of a six petaled flower on one side and a five petaled flower or possibly figure on the other. The petals are pointed oval and on both sides there is a raised line border around part of the edge. It is 18.5mm in diameter, 4.2mm thick and weighs 7.16 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore difficult to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date (1250-1850 AD).

A lead alloy flat disk of uncertain function and date. The disk rectangular in cross section; it is 40.1mm in diameter, 4.1mm thick and weighs 42.42 grams. The disc has been decorated on both sides; there are faint impressions of incised marks and lettering, although these are no too badly worn to be made out. It is possible the object could be a bag or cloth seal but there appears to be no attachment fittings. It could be an impression made from a seal matrix in to lead, or a weight.

A cast lead alloy, shield shaped weight, probably of medieval date. The upper surface carries the design of a fleur-de-lys, the underside is flat. This was once, perhaps, a half ounce weight, but a narrow strip of material has been cut away from the upper edge of the shield, reducing the weight. This cut is very sharp, but whether it is deliberate or accidental cannot be determined. The weight is 24.7mm long, 18mm wide and 5.7mm thick. It weighs 13.01gm. A similar weight is illustrated in Biggs & Withers, 2000, Lead Weights:The David Rogers Collection, Page 42, number 113.
