An interesting buckle plate consisting of 4 parts: 1. The principal part of the plate is formed by a strip of copper alloy bent in two with a gap at the fold, like that on a modern hairpin, to receive the buckle frame and pin (now both missing). Three tectangular notches have been cut into the folded edge; a central pin slot to locate the pin and a further two frame recesses cut into the corners to receive the buckle frame. The front of the plate is openwork with nine holes cut into it in three rows. The row nearest the fold consists of three circles, then in the centre is a row of…

A complete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle probably of early-medieval date. The frame is of simple, oval form with a circular cross-section. The inner edge around which the pin is looped is flattened. The thick wire pin survives well with minimal pitting. The frame is retained within a simple, short plate formed of a folded rectangular sheet. This features a slot for the pin and a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end. The plate has broken at the strips either side of the pin. The lower half of the fold is abraded at one of these strips and one of the rivet holes. Two …

A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon S-brooch from the 6th century AD. It is a closed S shape in plan, with an integral catchplate and a hinge for the pin on the reverse. The front has two raised lateral ridges that follow the S shape from the top to the bottom of the brooch, creating three cells. The pin is missing, but was made of iron; iron corrosion is visible on the reverse at the hinge and catchplate. Many examples of this type are zoomorphic, however corrosion hides any evidence of this, if any, on the brooch. The brooch is in fair condition and is a light green colour. It me…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early-medieval stirrup terminal of the Anglo-Scandinavian period dating to the 11th Century (see Williams 1997 fig 4a). The zoomorphic terminal is roughly D-shaped in section with a hollow reverse where the stirrup arms would have slotted into the terminal. At the top of the terminal is a horzontal raised band, below this is a small perforation due to wear. The terminal depicts a beast's head with lozengeform eyes and a long snout. Above the snout are two V shaped raised bands. The reverse is hollow, at the tip where the arms would have slotted in is a …

An incomplete cast copper alloy stirrup terminal of early-medieval date. The stirrup terminal is formed from a hollow cylinder with an open attachment end that would have enabled it to attach to the now missing stirrup. Traces of iron corrosion remain within the open top. The cylinder narrows slightly and bends to form a loop which rejoins the main body of the cylinder roughly half way along its length. Further traces of iron corrosion are present around the external edge of the cure and where the loop meets the body. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour and is worn. The terminal…

A probable fragment of a copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian disc brooch. The brooch has an openwork design, possibly zoomorphic, and retains a stub of the original fastening. Most of the brooch, along with the hinge and pin fastening, have broken away and been lost. A complete example can be seen on this database (SWYOR-114BB0), though our brooch fragment lacks the fine moulded surface detail which has probably been lost as a result of surface corrosion.

A fragment of Early Medieval silver decorated with triangular punches each with a pellet in the centre. The fragment is sub rectangular, broken at each end and tapering. It may be a fragment of an armlet or finger ring, or possibly from a strap end. There are five longitudinal rows of punch marks, two rows overlapping. The fragment is curved. The object may represent hacksilver, but as it is broken rather than cut, this is not certain. Compare DENO-9F9344 (2010 T385).
