Copper alloy and ?jet, painted bracelet fragment. Cast curving openwork strip with twelve tiny facetted black beads of diameter 3.4mm remaining attached. The object does not show any sign of breakage and may have been attached to a cord or strap of another material (now lost). The fashion for jet jewellery for formal mourning was established by Queen Victoria after the death of her consort Prince Albert in 1861. Slightly c…

Lead and iron fishing lure. Plano-convex casting representing a beetle with eyes, wing case and abdomen modelled, and with the bent stub of an iron hook or pin embedded in its flat underside on the centre line, a little towards the tail. The form of the object enabled it to spin as it was drawn through water, and the low relief detail on the convex face was intended to set up vibrations to entice fish such as salmon or pike - its 'realistic' appearance would be of more significance to the fisherman than to his prey. If successful, the object would function as a gorge, to stick crosswa…

An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '[1/2]lb'. It is very similar to two lead weights recorded under LANCUM-1440E4 and LANCUM-0FA5A3. The artefact is incomplete due to old breaks. Dimensions: Diameter: 36.05mm, thickness: 3…

A copper alloy (bronze) farthing of George V. The coin has been pierced to form a pendant for suspension, possibly on a necklace or more likely on a fob watch. Further, the coin has been deliberately drilled, cut and filed to create a profile of the king. This work is very fine and the filing is extraordinarily neat, following the profile of the face and back of the head as well as the internal line which divides the inscription from the field. This design completely ignores the reverse of Britannia seated. The date of the coin (191[?]) and the wear suggests that it had been in circul…

Three iron rings of probably Post-Medieval to Modern date, with a combined total weight of 16.39g. They are circular in form and oval shaped in section, each of them with an oval shaped casting sprue at the cente of the outer edge. These rings are likely to date to the later Post-Medieval to Modern periods (c.17th-19th centuries AD if not later), although given the findspot an earlier date range cannot be ruled out entirely. All three rings have worn surfaces and measure: 1) 19.05mm in diameter, 4.98mm in thickness, and 5.75g in weight. 2) 18.47mm in diameter, 4.87mm in thickne…

Object type: POWDER FLASK

A half-rounded lead vessel, probably a post-medieval powder flask. The flask has lip which steps out from the vessel wall. This object was found along with six lead bullets (LIN-6A7411) and a metal badge that probably refers to the regiment (LIN-6ACA37). The finder suggests that this site was a rifle range for the Loyal Lincolnshire Yeomanry (1794-1828). Peter Hart kindly suggests that this could be a liner for a cartridge box. The cartridges would be paper wrapped in a cylindrical form and contain the powder change and the bullet.

A largely complete wrought iron eel spear. The spear has five barbed blades of which the outer pair are integral with the socketed handle. The remaining three blades are separate pieces which are riveted to the curve which forms the outer blades. A separate curving flat iron bar is rivetted across all five blades to bind them together. Remains of a wooden handle survive and this is held on to the socket by a nut and bolt. The upper part of the handle socket is broken and missing. Hollow-cast silver spherical spacer bead, or possible pinhead, of relatively modern (later Victorian) date (1850 - 1920). The bead is irregular due to crushing and damage in the plough soil. Two small holes are present; one at either end (internal diameter 1.7mm), presumable to allow the bead to be threaded on a wire. The bead is decorated with a series of wire filigree / cast cells on its body which are inlaid with coloured glass, paste and / or enamel. Very small silvered cast copper alloy Georgian fob seal dating from the 18th century. The fob seal is complete with intaglio but the chain is missing. The body of the fob seal is decorated with moulded scrollwork, palmettes and ribbons, but the tinning/silver wash on the surface is very worn and only survives in patches. The intaglio is made from glass, probably, and is complete. Is shows the right-facing bust of a man wearing a cap with his hair curled back over the rim. He also seems to wear a draped cloak.
