A tranchet chisel struck on a tertiary flake of mid brownish grey coloured flint. The artefact is very regular and well made it is likely to be of prehistoric date: Neolithic - Bronze Age (3500-1800 BC). A direct parallel for such a specialist tool has not been found. The chisel is a triangular (wedge) shape in plan and rectangular in cross section. On the ventral face conchoidal ripples can be seen - from this the direction of the initial rough out blow can be identified; this is at right angles to the work on the dorsal face. Cast copper alloy crotal bell, or closed rumbler bell, spherical in shape with a central mid rib that runs around the circumference of the bell at its widest point, which is 53 mm in diameter, where the two hemispheres have been soldered together. The top hemisphere of the bell has two larger sound holes and two smaller rivet holes which would have held the cast suspension loop, now lost, to the body of the bell. An incomplete cast copper alloy single sharp-hooked tag clasp, probably early Post Medieval in date, c. 1500-c. 1600 AD. Read Class D, Type 2: Circular/Sub-circular clasps with lateral attachment loop on reverse and composite construction.
