Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring, possibly a curtain ring dating from the post-medieval or early modern period. The object is circular in plan and hexagonal in cross-section. The ring varies in thickness where the object has worn probably due to wearing against another connection. Plain rings of such proportions have often been suggested to be Medieval or Post-Medieval harness rings (Geake 2001, 74), though they are typically un-diagnostic.

One half of an arm of a post-medieval spur dating from the 16th-17th century. Only part of one arm and its terminal survives. The arm is flat oval in cross-section narrowing towards the terminal and curving slightly in profile. The terminal consists of two circular loops with bevelled outer edges. Discussion: This style of terminal appears on a pair of iron rowl spurs excavated in Winchester from 16th and 17th century contexts (Biddle 1990, 1039-41, nos.3868 & 3872), but the type appears to have been used into the 18th century too. Spurs with straight arms, like this one, tend t…
