Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An un-retouched flint flake (debitage), struck from a core and showing previous flake scars on the dorsal surface. There is no evidence for retouching or further work on either edge and the bulb is retained. This may be a preparation or rejuvenation piece. Generally prehistoric in date (non-diagnostic), but more likely to be later Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 3000-900 BC).

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
An unusually large and chunky Neolithic arrowhead dating from c. 4000 - 2100 BC. The arrowhead was the cause of consideration by Alison Roberts (Ashmolean Museum) and Prof. Nick Barton (Institute of Archaeology), and thanks are given for their comments, which follow:
'The flint appears at first to be of considerable age, however it is too small to be of Upper Palaeolithic origin, but is not quite right for the Neolithic period either. There are large laurel-leaf arrowheads of the Neolithic that have been found in East Anglia, so it is probably better to consider this as a Neolithic…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped chert flake probably Neolithic in date. There is a prominent bulb of percussion at the proximal end although a later accidental break has removed any evidence that would have indicated whether there was a platform or not. On the ventral surface on the right side there is further evidence of accidental breakage leaving a rough edge also apparent on the dorsal surface. Four parallel aris run down the dorsal surface of the flake suggesting previous removals from the same platform or direction and at the distal end patches of cortex are still apparent. There is no evidence for r…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A knapped re-touched flint flake possibly later Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. A prominent bulb of percussion with large bulb scar and clear ripples of percussion are on the ventral face. There is original cortex surviving across the distal end. Aris and ripples on the dorsal face suggest multi-directional previous removals. There is an area of semi-abrupt short subparallel retouch at the proximal end of the right edge seen from the ventral face, becoming longer towards the centre of the flake. The flake is dark brown flint with a patch of lighter brown at the proximal end. It is 40…

Record ID: SWYOR-058267
Object type: POINT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint projectile point dating from the Neolithic period, about 3500 - 2100 BC. It is triangular in plan, the distal end being a deliberate break across the flake. It is also triangular in section with a central dorsal ridge. Both sides and the proximal point are retouched with irregular abrupt removals. It is unlikely that this is an arrowhead but as the break is deliberate it was probably hafted at the broken end and was used as some form of projectile. It is 26.8mm long, 21.8mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It weighs 3.33gm. The flint is mottled tan and grey.

A retouched flint flake of uncertain date, either mesolithic or neolithic, dating from 8300 - 2100 BC. It is sub-triangular in plan and triangular in section. The left edge has been retouched with fine and abrupt removals, possibly to make a scraping edge. The flint is tan coloured, fading to white at the distal end. It is 32.9mm long, 18.7mm wide and 5.8mm thick. It weighs 3.72gm.
