Complete cast copper alloy object, possibly a harness fitting. Probably Late Iron Age or Early Roman (100 BCAD 100). Length 33mm, width 33mm and overall thickness 10mm. Weight 9.86g. The object is flat with a thickness of about 3.5mm. It is lozenge-shaped in plan with an integral loop at the rear. Each corner of the lozenge extends and evolves to form a spheroidal terminal. Incomplete copper alloy Iron Age to Roman Colchester type brooch. Missing the spring, pin and catchplate, it is extremely corroded and most of the surface is missing. Small flat wings. An Iron Age copper alloy decorative mount, probably of mid to late 1st century AD date. The perforated copper alloy mount or escutcheon is probably from a vessel. The mount is likely to be complete with a length of 23.05mm, a width of 15.89mm and a depth of 21.45mm. The sides of the mount are flat and converge towards the ‘beaked’ end. A circular perforation with a diameter of 6.6 - 7.6mm penetrates both sides near their top. A smaller perforation with a diameter of 5.0mm meets the first opening from below. An Iron Age ‘Horn Cap’. This is an enigmatic type of object as no one is clear what they were made for. Horn Caps, however, were almost certainly not made to fit on the end of the axle of an Iron Age chariot. There are probably only about 20 or so Horn Caps in Museums or private collections. They have only been found in Britain, and have never been found in other parts of Europe.
