Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cumbria

Possibly a wrought iron socketed sickle fragment dating from the Earliest Iron Age, that is c. 800-600BC. It would have been part of the Early Iron Age Llyn Fawr metalwork assemblage and contemporary with early iron spearheads, wrought iron socketed axes, copper-alloy socketed axes of Sompting and related types and Hallstatt razors. The fragment is very worn and the surface on both obverse and reverse is pitted and flaky and in need of conservation. The edges of the blade are jagged and the original line is difficult to ascertain. The artefact has a strong midrib along its entire lengt…

Two incomplete and probably Roman iron hobnails, with broken square-sectioned shafts. One has a conical, rectangular head (9.97x6.06x4.21mm), its overall length is 11.88mm and it weighs 0.81g. The other has a square conical head (8.44x7.83x4.14mm), its overall length is 14.26mm and it weighs 1.16g. The shaft is bent towards the end. Although it is rare for iron nails to survive for a prolonged period, this size and shape conforms to known examples of Roman hobnails.

Half of a set of Medieval to Modern shears. One complete blade and arm survive, along with roughly half of the broader connecting loop. The shears are undecorated three pairs of double notches on the sides of the arm. The shears are covered in iron corrosion and part of the edge of the blade has chipped. Shears are often undecorated or simply decorated and there shape changes little between the Medieval and Modern periods, therefore a broad 1200-1900 AD date is suggested. Dimensions: length: 124.29 mm; width: 16.77 mm; thicness: 11.23 mm; weight 11.84g.

An incomplete Post Medieval to Modern iron knife. The knife has a complete scale tang with a, now flattened, round terminal. There are two in-situ rivets through the tang, and a hole for a third, which would have held the scales in place. The scales are no longer present. The tang and the blade are integrally attached by a short solid bolster. The blade itself is broken, so the true length of the knife is uncertain. None of the remaining iron knife is decorated. Scale tang knifes were made from the late medieval period onwards, and the lack of decoration or maker's mark on this ex…

A fragment of a Post Medieval iron knife, dating AD 1600-1650. The knife has a long, solid bolster, hexagonal in section, which flattens into a narrow blade. The blade has a straight, worn break across its width, 47.9mm from the bolster. At the other end of the bolster is a pin tang with a worn tip. The rest of the handle is missing. The bolster is undecorated beyond its six facets. A knife with a similar hexagonal bolster previously found on the Thames foreshore is early 16th century in date(Brown 2001, 83), so this knife is likely of a similar date. Cast iron shot, spherical in shape, with pitted surface, but with most of the surface iron corrosion product having fallen away since it was found, leaving the original object. The shot is about an inch and a quarter in diameter, or 39 mm, which could have been used by the smaller artillery pieces like the 'base', or small cannon, which was the smallest of the 'standard' list of guns of the late 16th century, at one and a quarter inch calibre, but equally could have been used as grape shot for some of the larger pieces. In the 17th century, during the Civil War, any iron object was us…

Cast iron cannon ball, spherical in shape, pitted and corroded on the surface but not damaged from use. The diameter of 82 mm and weight of almost 2kg of the cannon ball compares well with examples of Civil War shot in the Royal Institution of Cornwall's collections, in particular a cannon ball from Castle Dore, Lostwithiel (TRURI 1992.91) and another from Tresillian Bridge (TRURI 1993.8), both Civil Ware battle sites. The size and weight of the ball suggests that it would fit a 'Minion' cannon which had a 3.5 inch bore and shot a 4 pound ball (Bailey, 2000, 95). These were used from …

Copper alloy and iron possible screw. An iron shank sheathed in copper alloy, with three turns of a finely inscribed screw thread on its outer surface. Corroded iron projects from one end; the other appears to have been cut with heavy shears. An unidentified artefact of high iron content metal. Sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded corners and one end wider then the other, and with transerve grooves at the wider end, the object takes the form of an animals paw, or foot. Slightly bent, there are two grooves on the reverse of the object. Bothe ends appear broken. The wear and corrosion of this object make an identification difficult. Images have been sent to curators at teh British Musuem, and to Finds Advisors of the PAS, and so this record will be updated in due course.
