A complete quartzite axehead of late Neolithic date 3500-2100 BC. The axehead is triangular in plan and ovate in section. The dorsal surface is invasively flaked across the entire surface, with negative scars indicating knapping blows from right to left hand sides. Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy lid from a box of nested cup weights of late post-medieval date. What remains of the lid is semi-circular and extremely worn and beaten, with a small perforation close to the surviving edge. The perforation most probably marks the point at which the handle would have been attached to the lid. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is extremely worn. The lid is 32.3mm long, 16.7mm wide, 3.9mm thick and weighs 8g. Lids with handles, such as this one, appear to be of post-medieval date. A similar though more complete example can be seen on the…

The coins were delivered to the FLO for North Yorkshire on May 10th, and to the British Museum on May 11th. The coins have not been cleaned or otherwise treated since their arrival at the BM, but were …

All but one are official English coins of the Long Cross type, issued between 1247 and 1279. The Long Cross coinage was issued in the name of King Henry III (although it continued to be produce for a few years into the reign of Edward I). Modern numismatists have broken the coinage up into a series of classes, which allow coins to be dated more precisely w…
