A Post Medieval lead alloy small bowl, probably a salt, probably dating to the 17th century. The bowl has a rounded base, curved walls and a rim which has been rolled back on itself. The bowl has tripod feet soldered onto the body. One of these is missing and there is the corresponding section of the wall missing as well. The rim is decorated with diagonal lines creating a twisted rope effect. The feet are also decorated with a scallop shell at the point of attachment with the bowl and there is some decorative moulding on the base of the foot. There are no traces of maker's mark…

Pottery Body Sherd. Hard fine dull red fabric with thick black internal and external glaze, from a large thin walled vessel. The internal glaze is bubbled so as to expose the fabric beneath, so a kitchen function would perhaps be unlikely. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1950. This sherd was kindly examined by Helen Fry, Sandra Firth and Hazel West of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Thickness: 6mm, Weight: 99.17gms

Base fragment of a Roman ceramic bowl or dish in samian (terra sigillata) ware. The fabric is pale orange with mica, sparse fine quartz sand and rounded dark red iron ore grains. Bright orange semi-vitrified slip on the inner and outer sides. Lines from wheel throwing. Part of the base and foot ring survive but too little to identify the form. Abraded breaks, 8.80 grams. The colour and presence of mica may suggest a central Gaulish centre, probably Lezoux dating from c. AD 120-200.

Pottery and lead vessel repair of potsherd. Mended sherd of reduced fabric with oxidised external surface and a thick white slip within; a dribble of splashed glaze appears on the outer surface. A blob of lead has been used to mend a cavity of depth 2.9mm on the inside, though this flaw did not carry through the vessel wall. This repair was perhaps to enable use of the vessel in a dairy or similar setting, and probably corrected a manufacturing flaw rather than damage incurred in the working life of the vessel. Suggested date: Later Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 40.2mm, Thickness …

Half of the base of a Roman greyware vessel. The base would have been about 12cm in diameter. The fabric is hard and coarse with an irregular laminated texture. It is light grey throughout and contains numerous poorly sorted inclusions, mainly quartz, with fewer slightly larger, round black inclusions and smaller particles of mica. Most of the original surface is missing. The centre of the base has a slight omphaloid depression. The base is 22.76mm thick.

A cast copper alloy foot fom a vessel of Roman date. The foot is lunate (peltate) and would have formed one of three soldered to the base of a round-bottomed bowl. WAW-18C577 is very similar. Crummy illustrated a similar artefact as #2051 (1983, p73, fig 76) described as a possible vessel foot, and dated to Period 3 ( c. 60 - c.80 AD). This identification has been confirmed by the discovery of a complete strainer bowl from part of the Wheathampstead burial group (2002 T83), Hertfordshire. The base displays three feet of this style, attached flat to the base, with the peltate tips …

Lead flat-based miniature bowl. The flat base appears from the photograph to have a diameter of c. 26mm and the straight sides slope upwards to a maximum diameter of 51mm at the rim. A drilled hole in the upper side of diameter 2mm may have been intended to secure the object. A series of notches runs along the rim about one third of the way around its circumference. Now dented on one side, and patinated overall. This object may be a water or food bowl for a caged bird, with provision to tie it to the cage bars. The weight of lead would help prevent the bowl being knocked ove…

A Medieval to post-Medieval foot from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel (c. 1250-c. 1650 AD). The object is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section throughout its length. It has a flat rear face and the base is also flat. At the top there is an uneven break. This foot has a brown patina with small areas of corrosion. There is no sign of any soot. Height: 23.42mm; width: 20.27mm; thickness: 12.26mm. Weight: 19.19g. A fragment of a Medieval to Post-Medieval cast copper-alloy handle from a cauldron (c. 1250-c. 1650 AD). The handle was originally L-shaped and has a break close to the bend. The handle is oval in cross-section throughout it length with a small amount of the vessel rim remaining at the complete end where it is attached immediately below the rim. The fragment is corroded and has a drab green patina with small areas of sooting. The breaks are old. This 'L'-shaped cauldron lug is similar to one illustrated in Butler et. al. (2009, 5; ref. 3a).
