Object type: END SCRAPER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
End scraper worked on a flake of grey translucent flint with opaque cream inclusions. It appears to have been a plunging flake from a core as there are parallel scars on the dorsal surface with a hinged termination to one of them. The end scraper scars are parallel and semi-abrupt and work around on to the right margin and finish with a sharp notch. Shaunie found a large deeply concave section granite saddle quern fragment nearby.(632B.1). Butler illustrates a similar end scraper on page 166, fig 70, 5.

Found by Shauney Strick;A large piece of flint for this area which has been flaked off the end of a nodule. Flakes have been removed from the edge of the platform created and have shallowly removed cortex from the dorsal surface. The edge has been heavily abraded in places as though localised deliberate use for a grinding or strike-a-light task. There is an overall water worn appearance. There is fresher abrasion to the tip of the tool and this might be recent plough damage or reuse after the tumbling in water. Butler describes strike-a-lights from prehistoric to Medieval times on page 17.

Found by Shauney Strick;a blade of brown translucent lightly rolled pebble flint worked on the distal end with an undercutting abruptly worked straight oblique end scraper. The left lateral margin has shallow semi-invasive flake scars on both the dorsal and ventral side. The right margin has a semi-abruptly worked notch towards the distal end. This blade has been used for several different types of task. Butler illustrates a combination notch and scraper on page 169, fig 71, 5.

A plunging blade of fine marbled grey and cream flint with sinuous oblique dorsal scars truncated by a blade scar in the same direction as the blade removal. The lateral margins are sharp and have been used with fine retouch on the concave left margin. Notches have been worked in the right margin with associated ventral use gloss. This is particularly intense and carries over onto the dorsal side of a denticule on the distal end of the right margin.Butler(2005) illustrates a notched flake on page 115, fig 46, 2.

Cast copper alloy hollow composite button, circular in plan and spherical in profile, with a separate soldered backplate that has an attachment loop or shank that is circular in profile. Most of the original surface of the exterior of the button has corroded away, but it appears to have been undecorated. Cast copper alloy small spectacle double-loop buckle with a narrowed and slightly recessed pin bar and internally bevelled and widened exterior edges to each loop. There is a linear grooved pin rest half way along the inner edge of one loop of the frame, but the pin is now missing. Where the dark green patina survives on the outer and inner surface of the frame, there are also traces of matt black lacquer which was used to protect the surface of the copper alloy (Whitehead, 1996, 8). Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similarly small example on page 53, No.297, which is dated from c.135…

Incomplete cast copper alloy mount, lozenge-shaped in plan with one trefoil knop survivng, and missing the opposite terminal, which was likely also a trefoil. There is one integral pointed lug on the back of the trefoil terminal and the other broken missing end would also have had another pointed lug. The extant lug is quite long at 10mm. The surface of the mount is quite corroded and pitted, but some foliate decoration can be made out on the trefoil terminal. There are also blackened areas which may be the remains of black lacquer or tinning. Read (2001) illustrates as similar exam…
