Copper alloy possible stylus. Cast round section rod with a moulded point at one end, flat at the other. The form closely resembles that of both lead dry-points of medieval date and the similar lead pencils for schoolroom use which are of later post-medieval date. Late Roman finds are prominent in the vicinity, so this may be a fragment wjhich has lost the spatulate eraser usually associated with Rpman styli. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period.
