A complete cast lead vessel which has been squashed flat, and therefore out of its original form. It was of open form and semicircular cross-section, intended to lean against (or be attached to) a vertical surface. The vessel flares out as its sides ascend; the flaring is more slightly pronounced above a pair of low transverse ridges around two-thirds up the vessel's side. They are echoed by an upper line at the lip. The field between is plain, unlike on other examples (cf. HAMP-5EE152 on this database for example). At the base the vessel is 42.0mm across, expanding to 73.2mm at the (…

Two pottery rim sherds and seven body sherds from a Bronze Age vessel that might have been used as an urn or a large storage vessel for food, as it would have originally been over 360 mm in diameter. The colour of the fabric is light brown to orange and varies over the interior and exterior surfaces of the sherds. The inclusions in the fabric include large fragments of pale felspars and grey augite, which suggest that the pot was made using gabbroic clay from the area where it was found, which weathers over the gabbro stone. There also appears to be some other material added to the cl…

A complete, slightly worn and corroded zoomorphic terminal of Medieval date, probably from a handle for a vessel, c. AD 1300-1500. This artefact is formed of a cylindrical body which is oval in section with a moderate central circular perforation running through it (diameter of 7.4mm tapering to 4.9mm), and depicts the head of an animal. The snout of the beast tapers and narrows to a broadly trapezoidal section, and the open mouth and nose elements have been delineated through a series of shallow incisions; the ears of the beast have likewise been marked with incisions but details for…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman vessel lid handle (probably), in the shape of a small bird, most likely a duck. It is missing most of its integral rivet, by which means it would have attached to the vessel lid. There is also some damage at the end of the beak and on the underside edge around the breast and tail. Measures 23.42mm in length, 11.21mm in width and 15.22mm in height. Weighs 8.5g. The underside of the bird is tear-drop shaped in outline, the breast being the rounded part. It is partly hollow, with a c.3mm wide bridge at the centre, from which the stub of the missing rive…

A copper alloy leg from a small cast copper alloy cooking vessel, like a cauldron or possibly a ewer. The vessel leg has a roughly circular cross section, with a flat but angled top where it attached to the bottom or side of vessel bowl, and an angles foot; when standing, the leg would have risen c. 30mm to the vessel. Cast copper alloy cooking vessels were in use for a long time, and this example dates from between c. AD 1350 and c.1600.
