Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two small pellets of metal of unknown date, probably lead alloy, which are probably the result of metal working in the area. One is a white patinated sub-spherical pellet which is about 4.8mm in diameter and weighs 0.49g. The other is a solid hemisphere of dark grey metal (perhaps unpatinated lead alloy). The flat face is rough and pitted, and the convex face is smooth with pimples at the apex. It is 6.04mm in diameter, 3.9mm tall and weighs 0.48g. Though superficially similar to the many lead alloy weights recovered from this site, these droplets do not have the characteristic depres…

Copper alloy Unidentified object. Strip of cut sheet pointed at one end; the edges are smoothed, so handling or use may have followed the shaping of this object. A crease towards the pointed end hints that this part of the object saw use, though the point itself is not heavily worn. This may have served as an improvised tool, perhaps a probe or stylus. Suggested date: Unknown, 40-1800. Length: 54.3mm, Width: 6.4mm, Thickness: 1.0mm,

An abraded cast copper-alloy piece, broken at one end certainly and therefore incomplete. It is long, thin and flat, of rectangular cross section. One end is expanded, rounded and perforated (Dia.: 4.7mm). Though abraded, the edge seems complete at this end. The circular zone around the hole is slightly recessed and thinned compared to the main bar beyond. This latter is broadly rectangular but has suffered from losses along the long sides. The short end appears to have broken in antiquity; the break is ragged and diagonal. This end has also been bent downwards. This artefact has a da…

Copper alloy Unidentified. Cast object of plano-convex section. Possibilities range from a medieval cauldron leg of eccentric form through to part of a zoomorphic casting, perhaps representing part of the head of an ox or boar with a snout or harness. The plano-convex section is probably an original feature, with the rough texture of the flatter surface intended to be concealed from view. The broader end of the object appears to have been broken in antiquity and is smoothed, while the narrower end displays a rougher and presumably more recent break. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman t…

A lead alloy flat disk of uncertain function and date. The disk rectangular in cross section; it is 40.1mm in diameter, 4.1mm thick and weighs 42.42 grams. The disc has been decorated on both sides; there are faint impressions of incised marks and lettering, although these are no too badly worn to be made out. It is possible the object could be a bag or cloth seal but there appears to be no attachment fittings. It could be an impression made from a seal matrix in to lead, or a weight.

A corroded and worn fragment of an uncertain cast copper-alloy artefact of uncertain date. It has two asymmetrical edges or possible flanges, one of which is 20.1mm in thickness tapering to 11.6mm, whilst the other is 15.7mm to 10.5mm. The central recessed element is broadly flat and creates an 'I' shaped section, and is 7.3mm thick. The object has been recorded as it potentially could be a fragment of a badly cast Middle Bronze Age palstave; however, the middle area is unusually thin for a palstave septum and the casting line at one side is unusual for such an object. Metallurgical…

A corroded cast lead standing weight of cylindrical form. It is therefore circular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand. An integral low suspension loop, trapezoidal in form, with a low central perforation runs across the whole diameter of the upper surface. The artefact now has an off-white surface with slight denting all over. At over an ounce averdepois its mass does not readily fit into this system of weighing.

From the main body of the possible head extends a rectangular in plan, sub-rectangular in section possible bow. A copper alloy possible lace chape. The object is roughly cylindrical (now slightly crushed), formed from a single sheet of copper alloy folded over. The object has a splayed foot that has small notches taken out from the edges as decoration, and a small splayed and notched terminal at the opposite end. The object bears similarities to medieval lace chapes, although the patina on this object suggests and older date. Further research and comparisions are being sought.
