Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy palstave (axehead) with central mid-rib pattern and remains of one side loop. The palstave is highly corroded with has an old, irregular break at the butt and along all four flanges. The septum is 2.3mm thick at the butt, 5.8mm thick at maximum, 16.8mm wide before the stop and c.58mm long. There is a deep hole left by an air bubbles at the junction of the septum and stop on one side. The flanges are all broken and missing their outer edges so it is not clear what shape or how wide they were. They appear to end at the stop ridge which is now the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two pottery rim sherds and seven body sherds from a Bronze Age vessel that might have been used as an urn or a large storage vessel for food, as it would have originally been over 360 mm in diameter. The colour of the fabric is light brown to orange and varies over the interior and exterior surfaces of the sherds. The inclusions in the fabric include large fragments of pale felspars and grey augite, which suggest that the pot was made using gabbroic clay from the area where it was found, which weathers over the gabbro stone. There also appears to be some other material added to the cl…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A fragment from an unidentified cast copper-alloy object of a known type usually referred to as 'moustache-like' or 'moustache shaped'. These objects are thought to date from the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age, after the discovery of one in the Salisbury Hoard (Stead 1998; ref. 117) and various other finds reported to the PAS which are associated with Middle Bronze Age material. An example was found recently in a Middle Bronze Age context at Clay Farm, Cambridgeshire (Robin Iles pers. comm. 9th July 2012; Current Archaeology March 2012, Issue 264, 35).
The object is a hollow…

A fragment of a copper-alloy socketed sickle blade of Bronze Age date. Weight is 12.08g, length of the fragment is 46.69mm, width is 16.73mm and thickness is 3.59mm. The cross section is oval or a sub lozenge. The edges are quite chewed, but Cyril Fox lists parallels from the River Thames (Tilehurst, Berks.; Plate XXIV, no 5), Norwich (Norfolk, Plate XXVI, no. 12) which have a similar straight blade. Due to the fragmentary remains of this blade it is impossible to determine whether the sickle was laterally or vertically socketed. Most of these socketed sickles are part of the Ewart Pa…

Spearhead, plain leaf-shaped head, wings ribless with no grooves, and loops low down on the socket. Length 175 mm, maximum width of blade 58 mm, maximum diameter of shaft 20 mm, maximum width of loops 26 mm. The golden colour suggests it may be have been deposited in a wet context, rather than in peat where a black/brown patina might be expected (see Fontijn 2002, pp.40-41). Greenwell & Brewis (1909) Type IV, probably corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 5, Pennard metalworking phase, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1150 BC, or possibly early Late Bronze Age.

The object remains a fairly constant width to the butt. It narrows very gradually, and then more obviously in the quarter at the butt end. The axehead has a rectangular cross-section with no side flanges as such; the surf…
