Object type: SEAL BOX
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy Roman seal box base. It consists of a rectangular box-shaped base with four perforated holes in the floor in a square arrangement. There are grooves at the top of the longer sides of the box which the cord attached to the seal would have been placed into. The hinge mechanism is intact consisting of two double lugs with the hinge still attached which would have been attached to the lid with a single lug. The seal box is incomplete as it is missing its lid. The surface is a mid brownish-green colour. The seal box probably dates to the 2nd and 3rd Century AD.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete disc-shaped plate brooch dating from the Roman period. The brooch is circular in plan with a raised outer edge and two pronounced concentric circular settings in the middle. The external ridged edge and the pronounced ridge of the middle circle are narrow and the same in width. The central circular ridge is much thicker and has a ‘stub’ of metal which appears to have been broken off, whether this is a casting fault or part of some additional decoration is unknown. Between the middle ridge and the central ridge there appears to be traces of a paste (now yellow in colou…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Trumpet brooch. The brooch consists of the trumpet head, bow and foot with catchplate and loop behind the head. Behind the head is part of the original pin fitting - a loop which would have originally held a spring from which a pin extended. The head itself is wide and trumpet shaped, with a central ridge. There are two raised collars encircling the front of the brooch at the base of the head followed straight away by the acanthus decoration. The acanthus decoration is relatively plain consisting of two heart shaped layers on top and below a circular la…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified object, possibly Iron Age to Roman in date. The object resembles a linch pin head. The object consists of roughly half a moulded casting, hollow in section. In plan, the hollow section is square suggesting that whatever passed through the object was also square and prevented it spinning inside the moulding. From the inside we can also see that the casting is of poor quality as there are many air pockets within the metal. On one side of the moulding along the break, it appears that there is a deliberate hole perforating the moulding which migh…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An elaborate quatrefoil shaped cast copper-alloy harness pendant, with inlaid enamelling. Ashley believes that these elaborate harness pendants were a later development of the earlier pendants. This example displays 'arms which are allusive for England and France' (Ashley, 2002, p23). He goes on to state that such pendants are likely to have been made after 1340 'when the fleur-de-lis of France were quartered with the lions of England'. Although an earlier date cannot be ruled out, due to earlier known alliances between England and France. The pendant has four lobes, with the attachme…

A fragment of an unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a buckle or a mount. The fragment consists of a flat curved plate with a perforation at one end and a pointed forked end at the other. The surface of the object is a mid brownish-green. No other parallels have been found of this object and so it is not possible to date this object.

A cast lead mount possibly dating to the post-medieval period. The mount consists of a bi-conical cast lead head which is circular in plan and irregular in profile. The upper half is dome shaped whereas the lower half is more pointed. The upper half of the head is decorated with field of dots which seem to be fairly regular in arrangement in radiating lines from the centre of the head to the edges of the upper half.
