This Ringerike style frame is 'D'-shaped in plan, moulded at the front and mainly flat at the rear. The outer edge has a projecting knop that appears to be the snout of a moulded stylised beast's head. At each corner of the inner edge there is a rearwards facing 'beak' or mouth with an eye in the form of a pellet. These two features are similar. The bar has a length of 14.6mm, a width of 3.6mm and a thickness of 3.1mm. The complete copper-alloy pin has a tapering shaft and is rectangular in cross-section throughout its length. Its overall length is 14.7mm and the width at the loop is 3.0mm.
The object has traces of a green patina and the surface of the metal is drab matt reddish brown.
Frame: 27.2 x 25.1 x 3.5mm.
Weight: 7.01g.
A similar buckle has been recorded from Meols (Griffiths, Philpott and Egan 2007: 62. Pl. 8, ref: 307).
Similar buckles have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. Discussion and Dating:
All four coins were found together (spread over a small area) within a ploughed field. They represent a closed group - possibly a purse loss or small hoard consistent with other examples of the period. All the coins are relatively unworn suggesting that they have not been within the monetary system long. All are struck / made between 1560-1561 suggesting loss soon after 1561. Initial marks are changed on Elizabethan coinage approximately yearly, the lack of initial marks post 1561 would suggest that the coins were deposited during 1561 or early in 1562. As such they constitute a purse loss that is often classified as a hoard under the Treasure Act (1996): "All coins from the same find provided they are at least 300 years old when found"
Metal Content:
The coins have not been tested for their precious metal content; however, all of the coins will consist of silver of the sterling standard, i.e. over 90% fine metal consistent with the currency of the period.

The flake is broadly semicircular in plan and a shallow U shape in profile. There is cortex along the struck end. The ventral face is curved and smooth with evident ridges down its length and a high bulb. The dorsal face is broadly flattened as a result of two main removals, with some minor removals at the sides probably the result of post-depositional damage. The piece is thin enough to be translucent with some impurities in the flint giving it a light-brown colour. </description><fourFigureLon>-1.473934</fourFigureLon><fourFigure>SU3724</fourFigure></result><result><district>PENWITH</district><objecttype>CORE</objecttype><county>CORNWALL</county><created>2011-12-21T12:12:57Z</created><regionName>SOUTH WEST</regionName><fromdate>-4500</fromdate><materialTerm>Flint</materialTerm><length>59.9</length><filename>DSCF9727.JPG</filename><thumbnail>361395</thumbnail><creator>Graham Hill</creator><identifier>Graham Hill</identifier><width>47.4</width><id>478589</id><old_findID>PUBLIC-1CD493</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>PAUL</parish><musaccno>2011.23</musaccno><weight>83</weight><imagedir>images/grahamhill/</imagedir><updated>2012-01-29T14:53:29Z</updated><quantity>1</quantity><todate>-1500</todate><broadperiod>NEOLITHIC</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>50.088689</fourFigureLat><thickness>29.6</thickness><description> A multi-platform broad flake core on an opaque mottled cream and light grey flint pebble. Further progress has been hampered by deep flaws. A flat but rough facet has been formed into the edge. Experiments by G. Hill(forthcoming) have demonstrated that hammerstones develop flat facets of this nature when used to strike glancing blows when 'pecking' granite or local greenstone. It is suggested that this hammerstone was used to shape greenstone axes. Butler(2005) illustrates a similar core on page 180, fig 74, 1. </description><fourFigureLon>-5.552343</fourFigureLon><fourFigure>SW4627</fourFigure></result><result><rulerName>Radiate (Barbarous)</rulerName><denominationName>Radiate (antoninianus)</denominationName><district>EAST HAMPSHIRE</district><objecttype>COIN</objecttype><county>HAMPSHIRE</county><created>2011-12-21T12:12:28Z</created><regionName>SOUTH EAST AND LONDON</regionName><fromdate>275</fromdate><materialTerm>Copper alloy</materialTerm><axis>2</axis><length>17.9</length><creator>Jason Lundock</creator><identifier>Jason Lundock</identifier><width>16.65</width><obverseDescription>Uncertain radiate bust (possibly bearded) facing right</obverseDescription><id>478588</id><knownas>Ropley</knownas><old_findID>BM-1CD2B7</old_findID><workflow>4</workflow><parish>Restricted Access</parish><notes> As this coin has been examined in person by the PAS Finds Advisor no image has been made of it. </notes><weight>1.9</weight><updated>2012-08-07T09:57:24Z</updated><reverseLegend>[SAL]VS [AVG]</reverseLegend><quantity>1</quantity><todate>285</todate><broadperiod>ROMAN</broadperiod><fourFigureLat>51.101739</fourFigureLat><reverseDescription>Salus standing left with a verticle sceptre and feeding a serpent rising from an alter</reverseDescription><thickness>1.8</thickness><description> A very worn copper-alloy 3rd-century barbarous radiate copying uncertain ruler, SALVS AVG reverse type, uncertain mint (AD 275 - 285; Reece issue period 14) </description><obverseLegend>Illegible</obverseLegend><fourFigureLon>-1.08732</fourFigureLon></result></results></response>
