Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MODERN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast or deep drawn silver domed thimble, with maker's mark, of Early Modern Dating (19th Century onwards).
The thimble is of a domed type, similar to that known as Dutch or English type III, manufactured between 1730 and 1800 (Holmes, 1988). It consists of straight sides, and a domed top. The sides are covered by a series of circular indentations, each with a surrounding rim, positioned in horizontal rows. It looks hand made as opposed to machine made as the indentation rows do not always match up. The base of the thimble is decorated by a narrow rouletted band.

A Modern gold dental plate. Although the item is of a relatively modern date, it has been included on the database as it is an unusual item to find. This plate is a partial upper plate; the small pins would have held artificial teeth in place, which could have been porcelain or human. Human teeth were used from the 18th century until the 1860's and were often referred to as 'Waterloo' teeth as they were often taken from soldiers on battlefields.
With thanks to Melanie Parker at the BDA Dental Museum for supplying information on this item.

Three early modern tokens dating from the early 19th century. They are three cartwheel pennies found in a wall at Borrowdale. They weigh 16.65g; 24.87g and 25.61g respectively and measure 35x2mm. They have been polished and counter-marked with sun-shaped stamps and were possibly turned into tokens for wall labourers, paid in the 1820s/30s (many thanks to the finder who researched the tokens and shared his research with me!).
The British Cartwheel Penny and Twopence was made in 1797 and 1798 because King George III thought it was good for the people to possess a coin that was equal …

The terminal from a modern, 18th to 19th century pastry jigger. The object is missing its functional cutting end, and only the top end survives. The object is 'T' shaped and terminates in a 'crimped' zig zag, presumably to be used in decorating the pastry. Beneath the terminal there is a double collared knop and then a circular shaft. These objects are often confused with Roman tile combs. The object measures 50.21 mm long, 35.25 mm wide at the 'T'shaped end, and has a shaft that is 4.9 mm thick. It weighs 14.6 grams. It has a smooth dark green patina.
