Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Berkshire

The 48.1mm pin is quite rounded at one end and, although also blunt at the other, it is clear that it was broken in antiquity. The shaft has a circular section and an even, pale green patina. It is shiny and smooth to the touch. It could possibly be a brooch pin or a hairpin. Found alongside it was a semi-circular loop of copper alloy with a flattened oval section. Both ends are broken and it has the same even, pale green patina and smooth, shiny surface texture. There may be no connection between the two items and the loop may have formed a suspension loop from a different artefact.

Post Medieval copper alloy hooked tag, now incomplete following an old break. The surviving object comprises a trapezoidal attachment loop at the top which expands into tri-lobed plate with openwork decoration, broadly triangular in cross-section. There are moulded rosettes at the junction of the loop and the plate on the front. The openwork creates a design of a series of three loops. Copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval or early post-medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring is made of thin sheet. It has pairs of moulded collars at its top and its base with a spiral of circular pits in between. There is no evidence of a maker's mark but it is corroded. It is 15.9mm tall and, due to squashing, 23.4mm wide by 5.7mm thick; it weighs 3.27g. The splayed sides allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late medieval or early post-medieval periods (Holmes 1988, 3).…

Probably a Post Medieval cast lead or lead alloy top off a powder horn or flask. There are the remains of two opposite loops at the open end. The position of the loops means that if the object is a powder flask cap then it was unlikely to be suspended from a bandolier. It has rouletted banded decoration (possibly measures) on the sides and an eight spoked 'wheel' decoration on the top. The decoration suggests this would be more likely to be from a hunting gun than a military one. Dates between AD c1600 and c1800, but most probably c1650 to c1700. The thickness is 17mm, diameter 25mm…
