Unidentified object that may possibly have had a function as a chatelaine. The object is trapezoidal in shape with a row of four circular holes at one end and three circular holes at the other. The remains of a copper-alloy chain link survive in one of the holes in the row of three. The two rows of holes are separated by an integral plate of copper-alloy which is decorated with ridged decoration. A similar object was excavated from ditch MH193 at Thrislington, County Durham (Austin 1989, fig. 57 no. 13). This ditch appears to have been dug during the 13th-century rebuilding of the …

Object type: STYLUS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead stylus. The object is sub-circular in section and is pointed at one end and flat at the other. It is possible that the item has been broken and that the flat end once flared and became wedge shaped, probably for erasure of marks made on wax tablets. The object is 59 mm in length, although it is bent from two thirds of the way up from the point. It is 7.4 mm thick. The stylus is similar to examples described and illustrated in Egan (1998, pages 270-271; fig 209) and it dates from the medieval period, probably from around 1150 to 1300.

A copper-alloy quillon from a Medieval dagger. The quillon was located between the pommel and the blade of the weapon and would protect the users hand. The quillon is cast and has a bulb on either side of the blade slot. From these bulbs the quillon tapers slightly and then expands, fitted to the blade. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount. The mount has what appears to be scallop shell shaped knops at each end and an oval centre. There is an attachment spike at each end on the reverse. These spikes suggest that the object was mounted on to leather, so it is likely that this is a belt or strap fitting of some sort. The object is 20.5 mm long and 7 mm wide. The patina of the metal has a slight red hue. This and the style of the object suggests a post-medieval date, and the object probably dates from the 17th to the 18th century.
