Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Socketed axe of bronze type but made from wrought iron. Loop on one side of axe, slightly angled. Blade expanded, curved cutting edge 65.5mm wide, length 110.0mm, thickness (maximum) 40.8mm. Mouth oval and flared from the body of the axe, socket shallow in comparison to those seen on bronze axe, depth 50.0mm. Unlike a bronze axe the bottom of the socket is marked by a change in section, the blade being thinner below the socket. The side of the axe bearing the loop is curved while the back is straight. Now heavily coated in lacquer but appears stable.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Iron buckle frame, D-shaped with a slightly expanded outer edge which has a flat cross-section measuring 5.5 x 4.0mm. The straight bar has a circular cross-section 3.9mm in diameter. The wrap-around loop of an iron pin is present, corroded to the bar. Width 38.0mm; Length 22.9mm; Thickness 4.0; Mass 7.01g. This buckle falls into Marzinzik's Typegroup I.10, D-shaped buckles (Marzinzik 2003, 29-32) and so an early Anglo-Saxon date is possible. Buckles of this form are known from other periods, however, and later material is present in the immediate area, so its identification as ear…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Iron knife, both ends broken. One end has a flat cross-section through which are two rivets c. 3mm in diameter and projecting on both faces, the longest projecting 9.9mm. The other end has a flattened, wedge shaped cross-section suggesting a cutting edge. Length 137.7mm; Width 23.8mm; Thickness (maximum) 2.8mm; Mass 27.77g. The form of this knife suggests that it was fitted with a 'scale-tang' handle made up of two plates secured by the rivets. Scale-tang knives begin in the 13th century at the earliest (Margeson 1993, 128) and so it is most unlikely that this object is associate…

Fragment of an annular brooch, flat in cross-section. It has a shiny patina underneath the corrosion, but no decoration can be seen. Fresh break at either end. Original diameter c. 50mm. Length 25.8mm; Width 9.4mm; Thickness 1.4mm; Mass 1.52mm. Possibly part of brooch FAKL-50C0A6, which has similar proportions and patina and was found nearby. Brooches like this are a common feature of fifth- and sixth-century Anglo-Saxon women's graves.

Annular brooch frame made from copper alloy, a very flat triangle in cross-section. The brooch becomes slightly thicker at the pin constriction, which is in the form of a rectangular notch cut into both outer and inner edges, the outer one flanked by two short projections. The edges of the ring are marked on the upper surface by two rows of irregular D-shaped dots or punch marks. There are some traces of iron staining close to the pin constriction; there is a slightly thinner area opposite which may have been caused by wear from the pin. The reverse is undecorated. Diameter (outside…

Cast copper-alloy knob from a cruciform brooch. It has a flat-backed D-shaped cross-section, and a deep groove across the centre separating a rounded upper half from a lower moulding. The lower moulding has the remains of two extremely worn grooves along it, just visible at either end but completely worn away in the centre. There is a slot across the flat base to fix it to the headplate, and towards the flat reverse is a hole which runs the full length of the knob to hold the pin bar. This is now blocked with corrosion from the iron pin bar. There is also iron staining elsewhere on t…

Fragment of a copper-alloy annular brooch, flat in cross-section, with an original outer diameter of c. 52mm. Both breaks are fresh. At one break there is an incomplete oval slot a maximum of 3.0mm wide and at least 6mm long, located closer to the outer edge than the inner, which would originally have held the pin. Traces of rust staining show that the pin was originally of iron. Most of the upper surface is now obscured by corrosion; there is a possible row of stamped decoration along the outer edge in the area of the pin slot, but this is unclear. The reverse is undecorated and has…

Copper-alloy buckle frame, oval or D-shaped, with a flat cross-section. The inner edge is oddly irregular, as if the buckle had been cut from a larger sheet of metal and the outer edge more easily formed than the inner. The pin bar is worn in two places, as if from the two hinge loops of a buckle plate, with the wear more marked in one place than in the other. The bar has traces of iron staining from the pin. The upper face has a wide groove in the centre forming a pin rest, flanked by a groove to either side; a little iron staining from the pin survives in the area of the pin rest. …

Copper-alloy catch-piece from a wrist-clasp of Hines's Form B12. It is basically rectangular, and flat in cross-section but slightly curved to fit around the curve of the wrist. On the rear edge are three D-shaped lugs, through each of which is a 3.5mm diameter hole for sewing the clasp to the cuff of a garment. The front edge has a long rectangular projection containing the slot through which an elongated hook, on the corresponding clasp-half, would have passed. This appears to have been formed by drilling a row of four holes which were then joined together, resulting in a straight e…

Copper-alloy girdle-hanger, complete but with its shank bent almost at right angles a little way below the 'neck'. The bend appears to have caused a little stress to the metal; there appears to be some wrinkling and cracking on the reverse (the convex face of the curve). The shank has a flat cross-section for most of its length, 9.8 x 2.8mm at the junction with the wards but tapering to 7.0 x 2.5mm at its upper end where it joins a thicker area of shank, the 'neck' in Felder's terminology (Felder 2009). This thicker area is 29.7mm long and is 5.0-5.5mm thick. It begins with a short l…

The foot is missing, with a relatively fresh break at the base of two mouldings across the foot. Head-plate from a copper-alloy brooch which appears at first sight to be square-headed, but is in fact a developed form of cruciform brooch. It has an undecorated central panel which tapers upwards and is outlined down each side and across the base with a fine groove. A slight step runs across the base, below the border groove, making a link with the bow. Two rudimentary wings, both undecorated, are squeezed in next to the central panel, one to either side; these extend both a little lower and a little higher than the central panel. The wings and central panel are surrounded by a bo…

A jagged edge beneath the nose may suggest a moustache or breath. The hair is represented by a bar ending with a large curl behind the head and a projection in front of the face, terminating in a bird's head. Silver ingot, boat-shaped with a D shaped section, now truncated with, apparently only one half present . Hackly fracture, surface rough. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 82% other elements detected were lead (approximately 13%) and copper. This surface analysis is likely to a slight overestimate of the silver content of the core metal as corrosion altars the surface of the ingot by preferentially leaching out baser metals such as copper and lead but the object contains more than 10 % of silver required f…
