Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A small plain double-looped oval buckle, cast in copper alloy. The buckle measures 23.3mm in length, 19.1mm in width, it is 3.7mm thick and weighs 3.17g. It is not quite symmetrical. The front of the buckle is convex and the back is flat. The central bar is slightly narrowed and the pin is missing. This simple style of buckle was used right through the Middle Ages and into the post-medieval period, so it is not possible to give it a more precise date (Cuddeford 1996, p. 20).

The external face of the second (rivetted) disc is moulded with a detailed depiction of a castle or tower. On the external face of the first disc there is an unclear device, possibly an initial. Geoff Egan comments: "This cloth seal is not familiar but may be Continental, perhaps from France or the Low Countries, and probably dates from the sixteen…

A wrought iron key of probable medieval date. The key measures 120.7mm by 37.5mm by 10.8mm and weighs 68.8g. It has a D-shaped bow with rounded corners and an oval cross-section. The solid stem appears to be facetted and probably originally had an octagonal cross-section. The pin is slightly narrowed. The bit itself has a central cleft which divides into three parts. Brian Read dates a similar key (Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, fig. 45, p. 71, no. 532) to the fourteenth century.

The Cylindrical wings conceal the axis bar for a hinged pin (missing). The bow flares out slightly, then narrows gradually towards the missing foot. The external face of the bow is convex, the back is concave and there are three parallel vertical grooved lines down the centre of the bow which s…
