A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable sixteenth century date. The strap fitting measures 36.2mm by 15.3mm by 2.3mm and weighs 4.96g. It is in the form of the profile of a female face and neck, facing right. Her features, including almond-shaped eyes, nose, mouth and braid-like hair, have been incised. Above the head there is a loop which contains the remains of an iron rivet. Below the head is a backwards curving broken loop. By analogy with a close parallel, SUR-296965, from West Horsley, Surrey, this loop would originally have continued upwards, parallel with the head-shaped …

An incomplete cast copper alloy sliding sword belt hook of probable late 15th or 16th century date. The surviving part of the sword belt hook measures 73mm by 31.1mm by 8.8mm and weighs 27.74g. It comprises a rectangular loop, through which a strap would pass, and an adjacent curving section. If complete, the curving section would have continued round to form a semi-circle before straightening out and terminating, forming a long U-shape. Similar examples on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database include DENO-195653, from Corfe Castle, Dorset, SWYOR-7A0712, from Hampole, South Yorksh…

A cast copper alloy swivel of probable twelth century date. The swivel measures 33.3mm in length by 12.1mm in diameter and weighs 9.21g. It has been cast in two pieces which are joined by an integral bolt. At the point where the two sections adjoin, they are both cylindrical. The smaller of the two pieces narrows into a central flat section which is moulded to represent a stylised animal head on both sides and terminates in a loop. The large part also narrows into a central flat section, but this piece is openwork with a larger oval hole to accommodate the rivet and a smaller sub-circ…

A sheet copper alloy strap fitting of probable late fifteenth to early sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 14.6mm by 14.3mm by 1.1mm and weighs 0.75g. It lozenge-shaped and has turned over edges. The front is decorated with a stamped pattern comprising a central cross bottony surrounded by a double circle. There is no trace of the separate rivet which was probably soldered to the centre of the reverse. A broadly similar fitting from Exeter, Devon, can be seen in Read's 'History Beneath or Feet' (1995, p. 115, nos. 728). Read dates the Exeter example to between the start of the…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable late fifteenth to sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 28.8mm by 12.9mm by 3.2mm and weighs 4.76g. It consists of a triangular plate with a shallow pointed identation in the centre of the short side and a backwards curving hook at the opposite end. This hook holds a cast copper alloy ring with a diameter of 11.6mm. The main part of the fitting is perforated by two equally spaced central rivet holes, both containing iron corrosion. The front of the fitting is slightly convex and the back slightly concave. Similar fittings can be seen…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 26.3mm by 14.5mm by 2.3mm and weighs 2.18g. It is sub-triangular with curvilinear sides and a faint, apparently foliate, design incised on the front. In the centre of the wider end there is a rivet hole which contains the remains of a corroded iron rivet. A similar fitting from south-west Wiltshire can be seen in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 30, 41, fig. 24, no. 349). Read suggests the Wiltshire example formed part of a matching suite of items.

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The fitting measures 25.2mm by 10.2mm by 1.9mm and weighs 3.67g. It is a long oval with slight projections in the centre of both long sides. There is a centrally placed sub-circular perforation. At each end of the reverse there is a curving integral lug, one of which is broken part way along its length. Similar fittings can be seen in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 28, 36, fig. 21, nos. 307, 310, 314).

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The fitting measures 27.8mm by 15.3mm by 2.9mm and weighs 3.59g. The front is convex and the back slightly concave. On the reverse are the stubs of two pointed integral lugs. The fitting is quite worn but would probably have originally been curvilinear with three lobes at each end and a longitudinal line of symmetry, similar in shape for example to no. 285 in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 28, 34, fig. 19).

A cast copper alloy strap-slide of probable seventeenth century date. The slide measures 81.3mm by 13.9mm and weighs 9.5g. It is in the form of a long oval loop. One of the long sides has been flattened into a elongated lozenge. The rest of the loop has a circular cross section with a diameter of about 2.5mm. There is a break close to the centre of the long side. Traces of the incised and gilded decoration survive on the external face of the flat section. This appears to consist of a foliate design in seventeenth century style. The strap-side would have been used to hold down the free …

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The strap fitting is in the form of two addorsed acorns and measures 37.9mm by 10.9mm by 3.1mm. It weighs 4.07g. The back is slightly concave and the front is convex. The acorns' cupules are not symmetrical, probably due to wear. On the back of the fitting are the stubs of two integral lugs which would have been used to secure it onto a leather strap. The object is fairly corroded with an uneven surface. Similar strap fittings on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database include NMS-9E6FF0, from Raveningham, Norfolk…

A probable sheet copper alloy strap plate of later fourteenth or early fifteenth century date. The flat rectangular fitting measures 41.7mm in length, 21.9mm in length, 1.2mm in thickness and weighs 5.7g. Each of the shorter sides has had three rounded triangular notches removed. The central notch is slightly larger and a short horizontal line has been incised across the plate from the 'points'. There is a rivet hole at each angle. Three of the rivets are broken in situ but the fourth is intact. In the centre of the fitting there are two puched perforations which have diameters of arou…

Late medieval or early post-medieval silver strap-fitting or belt chape, U-shaped, cast with scalloped lower edge, raised ridge and central hole, three smaller holes above, perpendicular-style edging across upper edge. On the back, two studs for attachments, mark made by metal file cleaning up the cast. Approximately 2cm across. The rear of the object is covered in the curving lines commonly seen on items cast in moulds made of cuttlefish bones. Compare an engraved gold example with St George and the Dragon in The British Museum (Prehistory and Europe 1991, 6-7, 1). The style of the o…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The fitting comprises a central dome with a concave reverse and an openwork teardrop-shape with a slightly pointed terminal knop to one side. The former corresponding symmetrical element is almost entirely missing. The fitting has a slight forward curve. On the back of the surviving terminal knop is the stub of one of the integral rivets. A complete strap fitting of similar form and size can be seen in Read's Metal Artefact's of Antiquity (2001, pp. 29, 38, no. 339).

A cast copper alloy sword belt fitting of post-medieval date. The fitting measures 50.32mm by 21.18mm by 2.8mm and weighs 9.79g. It consists of a curvilinear plate with a forward curving hook at the narrow end, which would have been fitted onto the scabbard strap for a sword. The plate contains a rivet hole towards each end (both of which contain traces of corroded iron rivets) and the hook has a rounded knop at its end. The front of the plate is decorated with incised curving lines in a foliate design. This sword belt fitting probably dates from the sixteenth or seventeenth century AD.
