A copper alloy wire finger ring of probable post medieval date. The hoop, which measures 28mm in diameter, is made from four strands of wire which are woven together. A rectangular 'bezel', 19.7mm by 8.4mm, has been formed from two strands of wire twisted together and in the centre of this there is a separately cast setting for a stone or glass. This is square with eight petals surrounding it, two on each side. Geoff Egan has suggested an 18th century date. Simple wire accessories of this type are difficult to date accurately without a context.

The ring is in the form of a close and thick spiral of just over two complete turns, 4.9mm in width and 3.3mm thick. It weighs 14.7g. The ring has been distorted but formerly had an external diameter of about 24mm. Its cross-section is rectangular with rounded corners. Both terminals are slightly rounded and the surfaces plain and undecorated. The ring has a rich green patina and an uneven, pitted surface. A similar finger ring has been excavated at …

A cast copper alloy finger ring of medieval date. The hoop has a diameter of 20.9mm, a width of around 1.8mm and a thickness of around 1.4mm. The ring weighs 2.4g. The bezel is in the form of a quatrefoil with an additional central raised lobe and measures 9.8mm by 9.8mm by 6.6mm high. In each of the five lobes there is a round setting containing the off-white remains of the adhesive used to secure glass or gems. One either side of the bezel is a shoulder defined by a plain transverse ridge. Geoff Egan suggests a later 13th to 15th century date.

A copper alloy finger ring of probable post-medieval date. The ring measures 22.2mm in diameter, 8.5mm in width, 1.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.04g. It has been made from a cast strip which has been bent into a ring and the ends soldered together. The slightly convex central section is bounded by two ridges on each side. The bezel and part of the hoop of a cast copper alloy signet ring of probable early post-medieval date. The surviving fragment measures 24.27mm in length and weighs 6.21mm. The hoop is 6.59mm wide and 2.42mm thick and the oval bezel measures 15.35mm by 10.3mm. The hoop's cross section is D-shaped (concave exterior and flat interior). There are traces of silvering or tinning on the bezel. The design on the bezel is quite unclear but appears to be a crowned initial, possibly an 'R' or 'K', within an oval border.

A cast copper alloy signet finger ring of probable sixteenth century date. The ring has an irregular octagonal bezel, 14.36mm by 15.59mm. The hoop has a maximum diameter of 21.41mm, it is 4.21mm wide and 2.15mm thick. It weighs 4.79g. On the bezel is an engraved leaping stag within an octagonal border. There are traces of gilding in several areas. There are several parallels of rings with octagonal bezel in the British Museum, for example in the Dalton Ring Catalogue (1912) nos. 641 (gold, with arms) and 635 (bronze, with pelican in her piety). Both of these are 16th century in date (p…

An incomplete thirteenth or fourteenth century silver gilt finger ring. The bezel is square with rounded corners and measures 11.28mm by 11.45mm by 4.25mm. It is hollow with a square opening in the front, but the gem is missing. The surviving part (about half) of the hoop suggests a former diameter of 19.36mm, not including the bezel. The hoop is 3.62mm wide and 1.4mm thick. It is decorated on the exterior with alternating engraved lozenges and four-petalled flowers. The inside of the band is plain. The gilding is worn. Weight: 2.36g.

A cast copper alloy finger ring with snake-headed terminal, of Roman date. The ring has been cast as one long strip, which could then be wrapped round into a hoop, although the ring is now wrapped around on itself rather than in a spiral. The ring is 4.03mm wide, 1.54mm thick and about 80mm long overall. It weighs 3.47g. The decoration consists of two nicked wedges at the visible (tail) end, followed by an engraved longitudinal V-shape, then eight dots, then three transverse lines. There is then an undecorated section, followed by two tranverse lines, then a longitudinal line. The rest…
