A cast copper alloy Colchester one-piece brooch, of early Roman date. The brooch was formerly long and narrow, but it is now badly bent out of shape. There is also a recent break just above the spring. Just below the bow is a crossbar which would have protected the spring behind. One side of this is broken and the other is bent. There is also a pointed hook at the top of the bow, which would have held the chord in place. This too has been bent back in the opposite direction to the way it would originally have sat. There were formerly eight coils in the spring, which have now partially …

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy knife or razor handle in the form of a three-dimensional lower right leg and foot, which probably dates from the Roman period. The foot appears to be wearing a moulded flat-soled Roman sandal and a woollen sock, which is incised with a faint herringbone pattern to show the texture of the material. The leg is hollow. Part of the corroded iron blade is still in situ in a vertical slot, 8mm long, cut through the centre of the top of the leg. The knife handle is 32.8mm in overall length and the foot measures 17.44mm by 6.68mm. The object weighs 9.81g. This knife handle…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork zoomorphic belt buckle of Late Roman date. The buckle's loop and openwork plate are cast as one, making this a Hawkes and Dunning type IIB. The buckle is symmetrical along the longitudinal axis and the loop's outside edge is moulded to resemble a pair of stylised facing dolphins. The dolphins curve around to form the rest of the loop and one tail protrudes from the inside edge, adjacent to where the missing pin would have sat, although the other has been broken off. Part of the adjacent openwork plate has also been preserved. Working away from t…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy finger ring with snake-headed terminal, of Roman date. The ring has been cast as one long strip, which could then be wrapped round into a hoop, although the ring is now wrapped around on itself rather than in a spiral. The ring is 4.03mm wide, 1.54mm thick and about 80mm long overall. It weighs 3.47g. The decoration consists of two nicked wedges at the visible (tail) end, followed by an engraved longitudinal V-shape, then eight dots, then three transverse lines. There is then an undecorated section, followed by two tranverse lines, then a longitudinal line. The rest…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy propeller-shaped mount of late Roman date which probably functioned as a transverse stiffener on a wide belt. The central circular lobe (15.15mm in diameter) and one of the two flaring triangular terminals (14.7mm by 19.75 by 7.56mm) survive. The surviving terminal is pierced by a circular hole (2.8mm in diameter) towards its end, which still contains a copper alloy rivet. The mount is 1.54mm wide, it weighs 3.75g and when complete it would have been about 44mm in length. The circular lobe is decorated with two parallel engraved circles and a central dot…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy La Tene 1B type brooch, probably dating from between 450 and 250 BC. Two coils of the spring, the chord and the pin are missing, but the object is otherwise in good condition, with a mid green patina. The overall length of the brooch is 52.93mm and it weighs 12.73g. The coils of the surviving half of the bilateral spring are filled with iron corrosion, probably all that is left of an iron axis bar. Below the spring is the bow. From the front, this is a long oval shape, 29mm by 7.68mm, with two parallel engraved vertical lines down the centre of the front and a furth…
