Object type: COSMETIC PESTLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Published
A copper alloy Romano-British end-looped cosmetic pestle probably dating from 1 - 300 AD. This example appears to be unusual because the handle or loop is placed on the concave side of the curved rod forming the pestle, rather than at the end or on the convex side. In Jackson's Catalogue of Cosmetic Sets, only 1 in the 600 examples listed has this arrangement.
The pestle is a curved and tapering rod of triangular section. It tapers to a point at one end, and extends into a sub-circular loop at the other end. The loop is of rounded triangular section, narrower than the working part …

An Early post-Medieval Spanish Colonial copper-alloy coin, probably a four Maravedis and probably of Carlos and Joanna (1516-1556 ). The other side has two broad, vertical lines terminating in lozenges at both ends, separated and flanked by what appear to be single pellets. There also appears to be a crown above. The central motifs are quite small in relation to the legend, which appears to have larg…
