Record ID: SUSS-2622E2
Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and heavily corroded Post Medieval lead or tin alloy decoration, possibly a harness mount. It is circular in plan and slightly dished. In the centre of the front face there is an integrally cast raised flower motif. The back face is rough cast with a number of small circular raised areas around the edge and in the centre that may be related to a fixing method. The periphery is uneven with some edge protrusions as well as areas missing, perhaps suggesting it was once larger or had attachment lugs. The front face shows significant remains of a whitemetal surface treatment …

A very thin silver disc, possibly a silver coin fashioned into a love token. The disc has been bent slightly into an S-shaped curve which is typical for such tokens; however as no features of decoration or legends remain, it is impossible to discern whether this was a coin. The object is approximately 19.87 mm in diameter and weighs 1.67 grams.

A complete copper alloy book clasp, probably dating to the Medieval period between the 15th and 16th centuries AD. This clasp is rectangular in plan, with a double-lobed end with two stamped circular holes above, one still holding a portion of the copper alloy rivet. The rectangular body is decorated in the centre with a series of concentric rings and a small central hole. On the other side of this central decoration, towards the hook, there is another stamped circular hole, similar to the ones at the lobed end. All three rivet holes are approximately 2 mm in diameter. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy sexfoil dress mount, dating to the Medieval period (1066-1500). This mount was fashioned from a copper alloy sheet, which was stamped in the shape of the flower, domed, and faceted with six petals and a single central circular hole through which a separate rivet would have attached the mount to a leather strap, casket, book covers, or perhaps furniture (Egan 1991, p162). This particular type of sexfoil mount was clearly in common use during the mid-14th century, and continued to be popular late into the 15th century (Egan 1991, p186). It weighs 0.40g and is 11.…

A Mesolithic or Neolithic knapped flint adze, dating to between 8300-2100 BC. The adze is sub-rectangular in plan with an almost triangular cross section which becomes more angular towards the butt. It has parallel sides, a slightly rounded butt and straight blade. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy Medieval casket key, probably dating from the late 12th century to the late 14th century (cf. Egan 1998, p111). The key is fairly simple in design, with shoulders where the bow attaches to the shank and is oval in cross section. The perforated bow is circular with an external diameter of 14.02 mm and an internal diameter of approximately 5.62 mm. There seems to be evidence of wear within its perforation at the top of the key's bow, possibly from suspension. The bit is plain and there is a short narrowed pin that protrudes from the bit. The key weighs 4.05 …
