There are signs of heavy surface scarring, and because all other shot / ball found in the area have been relitively smooth, it would suggest it has been damaged deliberately, possibly by biting. An incomplete copper-alloy post medieval portable sundial.
This example is of the simple ring type. It is formed of a flat copper-alloy ring with a rectangular channel cut in the centre for about a third of its circumference; this would have contained a separate sliding collar, which is missing. On the external surface, above and below the channel, there are inscribed measurement lines, above which are the first letters of the months of the year: 'I F M A M I' (the earlier months) above and 'I A S O N D' (the later months) below, upside down. A cast copper-alloy trade weight of Charles I or II, c.1625-1685 AD. It is circular in form with recessed front face and flat back face. At the centre of the front face is a circular indentation, with stamped marks of value present at top (12 o'clock) comprising a crowned letter C for Charles I or II and sword, and at bottom (6 o'clock) comprising a ewer. The weight measures 37.40mm in diameter, 4.27mm in thickness, and weighs 25.41g, just under an ounce in the averdepois system. See Biggs, 1992: p. 50.
