Object type: RIVET
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post-Medieval (AD 1450-1800) sheet copper-alloy rivet. It is 23mm long and weighs 0.61g. The shank narrows from 5.7mm in diameter to 2.53mm. The head has been left open rather than being folded over as is usual. The rivet is made from a kite-shaped piece of copper-alloy rolled into a cone. It is thought that these objects were used for repairing metal vessels. Egan (2005, p.101) suggests that these were a later form a rivet, which took over from the Medieval folded staples in the late 15th to the mid to late 16th century and continued in use into the 18th century.
