An incomplete, 2-piece Colchester derivative, Harlow brooch. The semi-cylindrical side wings and upper bow end of a 2-piece copper alloy Colchester B brooch. These brooches have their springs secured by passing the external chord and the axial bar through a lug with 2 perforations behind the head. The spring, pin and much of the bow and catchplate are missing. A raised ridge runs from the crest vertically down the bow and is a derivative of the original front hook feature. The thick, 3mm circular section bow has probably been deliberately broken. Late 1st century.

An incomplete, plain, Colchester bow brooch. Copper alloy with a moderately long forward facing chord hook surviving, along with a short length of the integral spring. The bow section is oval and undecorated. The catchplate is missing, cut or snapped close to the bow. Length from wings to foot 42mm. Similar to Bayley and Butcher (2004 62 no. 49).

An incomplete 2-piece Colchester Derivative bow brooch. The bow head, side wings and spring remain and a short length of the spring that was to become the pin. This is coiled and tapers to a very thin point as if the metal has been stretched out. The bow has a circular section which has snapped cleanly (possibly deliberately broken). The short wings (one slightly foreshortened) support the spring from underneath offering a clear view of the coils and chord. A cast copper alloy T-shaped brooch length 22mm, width 14mm, thickness 12mm, weight 5.38g. The brooch has cylindrical wings in cross-section which hold the axis bar (the left wing is missing), a slot in the rear for the pin which is missing. There is a rectangular recess on the apex of the bow. The lower part of the bow is truncated resulting in the loss of the catch plate. Date 70-150AD

Roman copper alloy hinged bow brooch, almost entirely covered in a ferrous concretion so that no decorative detail is visible, only the ends of the wings and a small part at the midpoint of the slightly straightened bow being exposed. The pin is missing. The bow, of flattish cross-section, widens to the head and narrows to the foot. The wings are long and narrow. In overall form comparable to T-shape brooches, e.g. Hattatt fig. 161 no. 917. Wingspan 31mm. Length c.47mm. Late 1st - 2nd century.

The fragmentary head of a cast copper alloy Colchester Derivative two-piece bow brooch - most probably a Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (AD 75-175). The fragment consists of only the head; the bow wings, spring and pin are all lost. In plan the fragment is oval - in section it is D shaped. Two small scars are present on either side of the bow head - where the winds extended. At the centre of the reverse is a sub-rectangular hollow. An incomplete copper-alloy Rosette/Thistle type brooch, dating from the early to mid 1st century AD.
The spring comprises seven coils of copper-alloy wire, wrapped around an iron axis bar and contained within a damaged horizontal cylinder. Distorted fragment, approximatetely one quarter, of a copper-alloy sheet disc decorated with two small repoussé bosses and three pointed-oval shapes formed from slightly wavy engraved lines.
Perhaps part of a Late Saxon disc brooch which would have had a pin lug and catchplate attached to the reverse with solder. The complete disc would have displayed five such bosses around a central one, all linked by lentoids to depict a cinquefoil.
