Object type: CANDLESTICK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-Medieval copper-alloy candlestick. The artefact has become detached from its base. The baluster-moulded stem has a hollow centre and extends into a hollow cylindrical socket at the top. Dimensions: 103.7mm long, 29.9mm wide. Weight: 85.91g. Roger Brownsword identifies the introduction of candlesticks with moulded sockets (as opposed to the preceeding straight-sided ones) as having occurred in the late 16th century (1985: 1). The suggested date range for this piece is late 16th to 17th century.

The squared end of the hook is located immediately adjacent to the back of the plate and a crudely formed copper-alloy ring is contained within its loop. A copper-alloy key fragment of probable Medieval date. The piece represents the bit from a rotary key, with the bow and most of the stem having been lost in antiquity. The remaining part of the stem is of flattened-circular section and has a hollow tip. The upper portion of the bit consists of a sub-rectangular block with longitudinal groove in its side and a horizontal cleft extending from the front to just under half way along its length. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy pin from a Medieval disc-on-pin type buckle. The upper portion of the pin comprises a 'D-sectioned', parallel-sided strip, its downward-bending top representing part of the broken loop. Beneath this upper portion is the much wider disc, in which four of an original five turrets survive in situ. These turrets have flattened spherical heads, their bases tapering into circular-sectioned rivets which sit within perforations in the plate. The top, bottom, and left hand turrets survive, as does the large central one. A perimeter groove extends around the upper surface of t…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy purse bar of Late Medieval to early post-Medieval date. The piece represents the end part of one of the bar's arms. It is of rectangular section, with a slightly wider, oval-sectioned, terminal, from the centre of the outer face of which protrudes a circular-sectioned rivet. Both of the flat surfaces of the bar bear crudely incised letters: one side reads 'AVE'; the other side appears to read 'TECV'. It is likely that these groups of letters would have formed parts of the legends 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA' ('Hail Mary, full of grace') and 'DOMINVS TECV(M)'…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable copper-alloy finger ring which has been adapted from one half of a Medieval swivel. The ring is roughly 'D-shaped' in plan, the circular-sectioned hoop gradually expanding towards the shoulders, which take the form of two stylised zoomorphic heads. These heads have moulded ears, brows and muzzles, with a groove for the eyes. They flank the bezel, which is oval in plan and has a flat, and apparently polished, upper surface and a perimeter groove on its inward-angling sides. At the back, the hoop narrows at one point; this is probably the result of wear from an a now-missin…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval copper-alloy single-loop buckle. The roughly cast frame of the buckle is 'D-shaped', has a convex upper surface, flat underside and has been tinned or silvered. The plate is irregular, the upper side being significantly longer than the lower. The wire pin is attached at central hole at the frame end of the plate. An iron rivet holds the two sides of the plate together, while the remains of a second such rivet would have attached the buckle to a strap. Dimensions: 40.6mm long, 15.2mm wide, 3.6mm thick. Weight: 2.33g.
