Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Six irregular lumps of metal, probably waste from metal working, or the result of metal melted in a fire. The material is a greyish-brown in colour and is suggested by the finder to be copper alloy, but is possibly some type of white metal. Four of the pieces are rounded lumps, but the remaining two have ridges and grooves, indicating that they were once an object, or are remains from some moulding process. The largest is 24.3mm long, 23.5mm wide and 17.5mm thick and weighs 27.29gm; the smallest is 18.92mm long, 11.59mm wide and 5.9mm thick. It weighs 3.15gm. The combined weight is 23…

A water worn stone pebble which was recovered because it is not the usually occurring geology in this area. It is a light grey-brown in colour with some dark inclusions and a few flecks of quartz. It is probably a type of granite. It is rounded to a triangular shape. It does not appear to be related to any manufacturing process but is recorded in case it is an exotic feature which has been brought to the site by human activity.

An assemblage of twenty seven pieces of lead alloy, probably metal working waste. Some are solid pieces, others are small pieces of sheet lead. The dating of these items is uncertain, but they may have been associated with the production of net weights, a collection of which was found in a nearby location. None of these pieces shows any evidence of having been objects or weights, but the largest piece, which is triangular, measuring 77.5mm long, 58.8mm wide and 17.4mm thick and weighing 321gm, incorporates some ferrous material. It is 65.8mm long, 40.1mm wide and 10.3mm thick. It wei…

An assemblage of thirty two cylindrical net weights, perhaps from the same net as they were found in an area measuring 10m by 10m. They were made by rolling strips or scraps of sheet lead around a cylindrical former. Most of them are intact but one or two are bent or have begun to unroll. They range in size from 25.9mm long, 10.2mm in diameter and a weight of 12.05gm to 44.9mm long, 14.5mm in diameter and a weight of 39.39gm. Their combined weight is 494.18gm. This type of weight would have been positioned around the rim of a cast net, probably used for fishing or netting birds, to …
