A complete cast lead trade weight of medieval date. The weight is shield shaped with a slightly smaller raised shield shape integrally cast on the front. The resulting recessed border is decorated with raised consecutive circumferential pellets. The raise shield element is heavily worn and displays signs of plough damage which render any possible decoration illegible. The reverse is undecorated with a slightly concave centre within which is a patch of iron the purpose of which is uncertain. The metal is a mid brownish-grey colour and is worn. The weight is 73.9mm long, 57.1mm wide, …

A small but complete cast lead trade weight of medieval date. The weight is shield shaped with a raise design of a fleur-de-lis on the upper surface. The reverse is flat and undecorated and the edges are very worn. The metal is a mid brownish-grey colour and is worn. The weight is 30.8mm long, 24.4mm wide, 6.1mm thick and weighs 27g. Lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. However with variou…

Body sherd of Roman date, probably of New Forest parchment ware, possibly of Oxfordshire white ware dating to the 2nd to 4th century AD. The sherd has a pale buff fabric with abundent fine quartz temper and occasional pink-red inclusions up to 2.5mm, possibly iron ore. It is relatively thick (6.1mm excluding decoration) and the curve suggests a large vessel. Seven pieces of iron sheet metal, possibly all from the same object. The pieces were found in the same field as the Early Medieval finds SWYOR-1590A4, SWYOR-14ED88, SWYOR-14A685, SWYOR-148980, SWYOR-146DF7, SWYOR-145073, SWYOR-142DD2, SWYOR-13FF91, SWYOR-EB7AA1 and SWYOR-EB10D8, so there is a possibility they too are Early Medieval. However, there is also modern iron from the field, so the date remains unknown. The largest piece of sheet iron is nearly 160mm long, 105mm wide and is about 4mm thick. It is an hour glass shape, but all the edges are broken. It is also curved. On the in…

An iron sword guard probably from an Early Medieval sword. The guard would have fitted on the blade between the grip and the top of the blade. It is solid and is rectangular in section with convex sides. In plan it is a pointed oval. There is a slot through the centre of the guard for the blade of the sword. The slot is longer on one face. On the shorter face is it 36.9mm long and 3.9mm wide. Compare database record ESS-D45534 and BH-902F70 which date from AD 800 - 1000. A similar date is suggested for this example.

On the obverse of this artefact it has a largely variable mid-green patina.
