A worn and corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy uniface mount in the form of an acorn. On the upper face the acorn is moulded and the cup delineated from the nut by a transverse ridge flanked by grooves. The stalk bends to one side as with examples illustrated in Read (2001, 29, 37; refs. 331-334). The reverse features a pair of facing pointed lugs suggestive of a c. 17th-century date. On the obverse of this artefact it has a largely variable mid-green patina.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A Roman solid-cast silver mount with domed, pointed-oval head, the surface of which is divided by a longitudinal central groove. A heavily encrusted rivet extends downwards at 90 degrees from the underside of the head, terminating in a discoidal stop.
A very similar mount, albeit with a hollow head, was found in a late 3rd to early 4th century layer at Verulamium, Hertfordshire (Frere 1972: 126/fig. 38, no. 101).
