A iron whittle tang knife of probable Early Medieval date. It is probably back form E using the typology discussed in Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough (originally from The study of Anglo-Scandinavian knives from 16-22 Coppergate, Ottaway, 1984). This can be described as a knife with a straight back. The tip of the blade is rounded and the cutting edge is unusually thick. The blade tapers from teh shoulder to the tang which is rectangular in section and tapers from the blade to the tip. The tip is bent and almost broken. It is back form D using the typology discussed in Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough (originally from The study of Anglo-Scandinavian knives from 16-22 Coppergate, Ottaway, 1984). This can be described as a knife with a back which is convex. The tang of the knife is missing. The knife is rusty with some post depositional damage. Most form D knives from Flixborough were found in the earlier phases, dating from the 7th - 11th centuries. The blade is 49mm long.
