Fragment of a Roman cast copper alloy finger ring. Only the bezel, parts of both shoulders and about a tenth of the hoop survives, the rest is lost to old breaks and the remaining part of the hoop is bent under. The ring has a wide bezel with an oval recess in the centre, probably to hold an intaglio, now lost. The recess contains traces of a white substance, probably a calcium carbonate cement to hold the intaglio. A gold finger ring, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. The damaged ring is of simple form, comprising a 'D-sectioned' band with no decoration on the outer face. The inner face bears the legend 'True love' and has three hallmarks: the right-facing bust of a king, the lion standard mark, the maker's mark 'I.P'. Dimensions: 20.4mm diameter, 2.1mm high. Weight: 1.85g. The king's head is a duty mark which was introduced on 1st December 1784. Between 1784 and 1786 it was struck incuse; the mark on this ring is cameo, indicating a date of 1786 onwards. A copper-alloy signet finger ring of Late Medieval date. The ring is stirrup-shaped. The oval bezel has been deeply engraved with a letter 'S', flanked by a pair of vertical straight lines, with recessed pellet embellishments above and below. The shoulders taper smoothly into the 'D-sectioned' hoop. Dimensions: 27mm long (bezel to back of hoop), up to 13.1mm wide (bezel); weight: 8.32g. Several similar rings bearing single letters were found in excavations in Salisbury (Cherry in Saunders and Saunders eds. 1991: fig. 12, nos. 17-24). These were compared to seals on documents of …
