Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire

A sheet copper alloy sword pommel, probably dating to the early-medieval period. The pommel is made from one sheet of copper alloy that has been folded from a flat rectangular base up and over into triangular profiled pommel with a rectangular cross section. The pommel is filled with a lead alloy substance, giving the object quite some weight for its size. The folds of the pommel do not quite touch each other and the lead infill has leached out. Through the centre of the pommel is the remains of an iron rivet or pin; possibly the remains of the tang but with a small diameter. Although…

Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian horse harness cheek-piece dating to the 11th century. The cheek-piece is rectangular in plan and has a D-shaped cross section, with a rounded terminal at one end, a rounded central rib in the centre of the length and is broken at the opposing end. This end would have expanded to form openwork links for the bridle strap and would likely have been decorated with scrolled patterns. The reverse of the cheek-piece is flat and plain. Williams (2007) Type 2.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandiniavian horse harness strap fitting dating to the 11th century. The strap fitting has thick lozenge-shaped openwork terminal with a knop at three corners; from the forth corner protrudes a rectangular, D-sectioned shank that would have extended and joined onto another (or more than one other) openwork terminal. Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Scandinavian cheekpiece dating to the 11th century. The cheekpiece is shaped like an elongated triangle, with a long, slightly tapered projection that terminates in a rounded knop. The opposite end is triangular but has broken across the hole where the cheekpiece would have attached to the strap and bit. This cheekpiece does not appear to have any decoration on the surviving parts, but other examples are usually decorated in scrolled or floral designs. The reverse of the cheekpiece is flat and plain. Williams (2007) Type 2.
