An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, a derivative of the trumpet headed type. The brooch dates from the late first to second century AD. The brooch has a trumpet shaped head which is hollow for the sprung pin mechanism, still intact. The pin, however, has been broken and is missing. The iron spring is of five coils and is held in place by an iron axis bar. Much of the iron from the spring has produced a ferrous corrosion product which has formed on the brooch. Above the trumpet head there is an integrally cast suspension loop, now broken. A ridge runs down the centre of t…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, probably of developed T-shaped type, dating from the later-first century to early-second century AD. Only the head and a small portion of the upper bow survive. The wings are semi-cylindrical in shape and have pierced plates at each end for the pin bar. The brooch was probably sprung but the pin mechanism is missing. The head is very angular and there is a step running from the top of the head down to the top of the wings where there is a break, probably where a projecting lug or loop has broken off. The head is decorated with a thin…

The brooch is of Polden Hill type and has the characteristic semi-circular wings with circular plates on the end, open at the back for the sprung pin mechanism. The wings are now filled with ferrous corrosion, indicating that the pin mechanism was iron. The brooch has a rearward projecting hook at the top of the head for securing the spring cord and the sides of the head …

Object type: TOKEN

A moulded lead bifaced token of medieval or post-medieval date. One side of the token has moulded decoration incorporating a central pellet surrounded by lozenges with radiating lines emerging from between the lozenges, giving the appearance of a many petalled flower. The other side has a crude cross-hatched design and it is unclear what this is intended to represent. Such tokens may have performed a multitude of functions from gaming counters to a form of small change used in the absence of official low value coinage within a local area. Diameter 18.23 mm, thickness 2.27 mm, weight…

A copper-alloy medieval strap end probably dating from the 14th century AD. The strap end is formed from two strips of copper-alloy riveted together by two rivets, one at the attachment end and one at the terminal. Only the rivet near the terminal remains. The terminal has been cut into a trefoil shape. The rest of the strap end is rectangular in plan. One surface has been decorated with a barely discernable abstract motif. Object type: STUD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy object, probably either a stud from an item of furniture or a gaming counter for a game such as cribbage. The object terminates in a conical head and an integrally cast shank emerges below. This tapers gradually to a point. The relatively crude appearance of the shank perhaps suggests that it was intended to remain hidden, making a stud from a piece of furniture more likely than a gaming piece. The object is heavily abraded and corroded and now has a dark green to brown colour, missing most of its suface patina. The object lacks any distinuigishing characteristics …
