County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A piece of tap slag of uncertain date from Roman to Post Medieval. It is dense, magnetic and black to purple in colour. It forms a thick plate which is rough and irregular on the lower face, with characteristic runs of solidified molten metal across the top face. This piece is just one small example of the many pieces recovered from the same place.
Tap-slag is slag that is 'tapped' from a bloomery furnace. This is carried out during smelting so as to allow the long continuance of the operation. It cools to a solid slag with marked flow lines. There were fewer bloomeries after the…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A crudely cast, circular lead weight of Medieval or Post Medieval date. It is circular and the upper surface is slightly dished. There is a narrow groove which partly cuts across the middle of the upper surface, but this is probably accidental damage. There are no marks of value, but at a weight of 53.61 (1.9oz), this was probably intended to be a 2oz weight. It therefore dates from the 14th century onwards when the imperial system of weighing started to be developed. It is 31.6mm in diameter and 8mm thick.

There are two circular rivet holes at the base and the remains of a third, upper rivet hole at the top. There was probably an incised design, but the mount is too worn for this to be discerned. The mount has a dark green patina. It is 41.1mm long, 28.7mm wide and 6.1mm thick. It weighs 13…

Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a wrought iron horseshoe, probably of medieval or post medieval date, AD1200-1700. The shoe is highly corroded and no evidence of nail holes can be seen. There does not appear to be a calkin (suggsting a later Medieval date onwards) nor evidence of clips or fullering (Post Medieval innovations). The sides of the shoe do not bulge round the holes, and the web is 30mm wide, making the shoe most similar to Museum of London types 3 or 4. These are more commonly found from 1200 onwards. There seems to be wear or damage to the toe. With only half the shoe surviving, the overall shap…
