Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded cast coper alloy double loop buckle of Medieval or Post Medieval date, c. 1350-1650 AD. The remains consist of a double loop oval buckle frame which is formed of a pair of D-shaped loops and a central pin bar. The pin is missing. The frame has bevelled inner edges but no further decoration. Traces of iron corrosion on the pin bar suggest that the pin was composed of iron. It measures 21.54 mm long, 16.69 mm wide, 2.02 mm thick and weighs 1.7 grams. For similar examples, cf. Whitehead 2003, p53.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete but slightly worn cast lead alloy spindle whorl of probable Medieval date. The whorl is circular in plan and bi-convex in cross-section, with a central circular perforation. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with a design of raised lines and pellets.
The central perforation has an internal diameter of 10.05mm and does not taper.
Spindle whorls are difficult to date with accuracy. Lead whorls were in use from as early as the 10th century to at least the 14th century, but there are only two decorated whorls from good dated contexts, both of which were medieval. Th…

A complete but very worn copper-alloy S-shaped strap fitting or fastener of Post Medieval to Modern date.
The S-shaped fastening has terminals which both have matching zoomorphic forms, possibly intended to be the heads of either snakes or dragons. At the centre of the object, dividing the necks of the two animal heads, is a raised moulded band of decoration. This band consists of a ring of four circular discs with a groove to the top and bottom.
The earliest snake-form fasteners appear on portraits of the early post-Medieval period, often in association with sword-belts. Af…
