Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval to Modern cast lead circular double-sided token (c. 1250-c. 1850 AD).
The token has a raised design on each side.
One side has a stylised fleur-de-lis and the other side is largely illegible (probably not letters).
Diameter: 22.97mm. Weight: 5.85g.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally. They are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval to Modern in date (c. 1250-1850 AD).

Small fine igneous rock ball, probably greenstone but awaiting geological comment by Roger Taylor. The ball is circular in plan and ovate in profile and section, with pecking all over the upper surface and a flattened base, perhaps through grinding or hammering. Such pieces do turn up on domestic sites but not in any quantity compared to mullers and rubbers. On these objects the waterworn cobble surfaces are all fresh and unweathered, appropriate for selection from a beach during the Neolithic. The beach selection would ensure hard enduring pieces. It is quite possible that the wear o…

A clipped, silver penny of Charles I (1625-1649). The penny is worn but the depiction of a bust on the obverse and an oval shield on the reverse indicate the coin belongs to North no's 2263 - 2266. The initial mark is not discernable but would either be a rose or a plume indicating that the coin was produced from 1630-1632. The coin was produced at the Tower Mint.
