Lead possible weight. Cast irregularly conical weight with off-centre longitudinal aperture of diameter 5mm. At the broader end the aperture is surrounded by an oval hollow of length 10mm, revealed by removal of fine red sandy soil. The mass of the object may relate it to Scandinavian-derived units of circa 24.4gms (plus or minus 0.8gms). However, such weights are not usually perforated, so use as a later ?fishing weight is possible. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval 850-1500 Diameter (base): 16.5mm, Height: 22mm, Weight: 25.16gms

A cast lead alloy Post Medieval shield shaped weight dating from about 1500-1800. It has been roughly cast and has a slightly concave base; it is undecorated. The material has a number of deep gouges and scratches due to wear and damage; there is also a roughly carved 'W' on the upper surface. The weight has a light-medium grey patina with small areas of ferrous corrosion probably indicating an iron handle. It is in fair condition and weighs 477g (just over 1 pound); it is possible that the original weight was 1.5lbs but this has been reduced due to damage and wear and the loss of the…

A complete Medieval to Post-Medieval cast lead unifaced weight, circa AD1200 - AD1800. Originally circular, the weight has been squashed from two sides leaving it almost oval to kidney-shaped. Traces of its original surface design are legible - a solid cross, the arms extending to the edge of the artefact, with a single pellet (diameter c.4.7mm) in each angle, and a small dome-shaped pellet in its centre (diameter c.8.8mm). These decorative features are formed in relief and are reminiscent of reverse designs on Medieval coins. The reverse of the weight is blank. It measures 43.9mm in …

Notes: Copper alloy item with patterns punched into one side. The object is flat; in plan it is rectangular with rounded edges measuring 115mm in length and 50mm in width. The sides are c3mm in length. The underside of the object appears to be plain, but much of the original surface has been lost. There is damage to one end of the object. The decoration on the 'top' side of the object is in the form of small triangular punch marks, in a line around the border. There is a small circle, made from the triangular punch marks and a wavy line which appears to run across the centre of the ob…
