A cast copper-alloy mount in the form of an eagle with its wings spread. The mount is post-medieval to modern in date, probably 18th century and is probably from the lid of a vessel. The bird's head is angled to the left and feather's are represented by moulded detail on the top and bottom. The mount is clearly broken and two lugs where the bird's feet would be were presumably for attachment. Much of the surface metal retains traces of a black paint. The mount measures 50.72 mm long, 50.31 mm wide 16.03 mm thick and weighs 45.1 grams. Several similar examples are recorded on the P…

Copper alloy probable mount. Cast mount comprising a knop with lug and the stub of a rivet in situ, a hemispherical concavo-convex boss with a textured display face, and a further knop with a flattened rivet or rove on its back and a hook below it. This object differs from later medieval purse hangers and pendent mounts, though the fastening with separate rivets might be seen as a medieval trait. The form may relate it to sword hanging suites of 16th to 17th-century date, though this may have been intended for a distinct purpose. Suggested date: Early Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Le…

An incomplete and corroded Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy mount. The mount is flat and sub-rectangular with a single square-cross-section integral prong projecting at right angles from the centre of the reverse side. The tip of the prong is missing from an old break. The front face is decorated with a raised border within which there is a foliate scroll in the form of an elaborate "S". The foliate form of decoration is perhaps more suggestive of a Post Medieval date. The single square-pin indicates the mount could possibly be from an item of furniture or a casket. . The m…

A nearly complete cast copper alloy zoomorphic decorative mount, probably from the Medieval period, c. 12th-c. 13th century AD. The mount seems to be in the figure of either an aquatic mammal, such as a beaver or otter, or more likely, a stylised interpretation of a dog or lion. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan and in general is comprised of two body segments connected by a narrow torso: the front segment consists of a head (12.72 mm thick) and neck (12.50 mm thick) with two front 'paws' rising vertically from the base of the mount; the second segment consists of a wide haunch wit…
